hand conditioning....
I know most of you that train muay thai participate in some form of shin conditioning. whether it be a repetitive kicks on a hard heavy bag or rolling your shins out with wood, the process is the same. my question is how many (if any) of you do anything for your hands? coming from traditional martial arts starting when i was 6 y/o i can remember hitting the makiwara board. no wraps, no gloves....just knuckle to a board that was tightly wrapped in rope. i have continued this practice throughout my MMA career never once breaking my hand from punching or KOing someone. I rarely even wrap my hands for a fight as well!!! I think that this is one traditional art practise that needs to carry over into MMA. Thoughts...???

I agree that it would be beneficial, maybe set 30 minutes aside each day to do it but its not easy when you have kids, a family to tend to, and doing three-a-days with your coaches.
People just seem to worry about conditioning/hardening just the knuckles instead of the whole hand. But the truth is that most MMA don't really believe in the effectiveness of TMA techniques as it relates to MMA even if they have a background in it. The rest of the guys in MMA started off in things like kickboxing, MT, wrestling, boxing, and BJJ so they really never got introduced to things like Makiwara boards like a typical wing chun guy would. I think it has it place but its really not priority when it comes to MMA training. Theres more emphasis and concern in learning how to stuff a double leg than doing some niche like exercise just so you improve your chances of not break your hand in a fight.

Agreed with this. Is of paramount importance, especially when thinking of `street` situations. I recently looked at getting a wingchun punch pag(fill it with rice/sand), will look into it in more detail soon.

You don't wrap your hands for fights? Wow, what about for wrist support?
If they work that well I should probably get myself one of those Makiwara boards..
(*Googles to see what a Makiwara board is*)

I wrapped my hands for my fights(they were amateur) but I didn't think you had a choice in the matter because I would rather not. I never wrap my hands in training unless my wrist is giving me problems. I think light hitting on a heavy bag with no gloves will build up your hand conditioning. I have no problem punching a heavy bag full force with no gloves on.
I do know what a makiwara board is but have never used one. I grew up in really small town and didn't have any kind of martial arts training available, not even wrestling.

Its all fun and games until you hurt your wrist on a heavy bag and cant nake a fist for a month(s). I used to be just like you....until i fukd up my wrist. But, badasses gonna badass.
If you insist tho, a good technique to build up hand and wrist strength/support is to fill a bucket up with rice, stick your hand in and finger fuk that shh1t

If you are referring to me I'm wasn't talking about just going to hit a heavy bag as hard as you can but a gradual build up to where you could do it.....I always wear gloves when doing heavy, heavy bag work.
