Yeah. Video adds weight though, for sure. That along with creatine bloat and a proper arch makes my gut look horrible. LOL. Honestly though, I'm still under 180lb and fairly certain I'm b/t 19-20% bf. I just carry most of it in my mid section. I think that I've committed to a proper lean bulk until the end of February, and then do my most disciplined cut ever. I promised myself that I would be the strongest and leanest I've ever been before I turn 42.

If I was in your shoes (I am not) I'd stick with the slower and steady approach, and keep with the 5lbs. Stay on schedule man, if you have a program that has been working for you, and it has, keep on it. Modifying it over some smack talk... no good sir !
I plan to keep my cycle jumps to 5lbs on bench press and overhead pressing... contest or not... it is working and I don't want to sabotage it.
I don't see either of us trying a 1rm of 315 for a while...

LOL. I really wouldn't increase 10lb over smack, but it sure doesn't hurt my drive to do it. . I'm just feeling really strong this week. If I still feel like this come Monday, I may go with a 10lb jump. If not, I'll go back to 5. When I'm dialed in, I'm pretty good at determining appropriate weight, and I'm not one to let any "macho" BS cause me to get stupid. I like making adjustments that make sense. I don't want to stick to just 5lb, if I'm convinced I can do 10. It just does not make sense to me. I like linear progression, with some flexibility.
As far as the modification goes, I'm good with that. Only seems fair. Actually, I really hope this is what happens.
I'm really glad we are doing this. It's already helping my drive. My training partner was really surprised at how I pushed myself on Monday. I think we will both look back at this comp and feel good about it, no matter who wins.
Tonight is squats, overhead presses and barbell curls. I think I will be tweaking my program significantly over the next 2 weeks, depending how my body responds to the changes I've recently made.Last edited by Paulie_G; 12-05-2012 at 06:08 AM.

I was chuckling at the fact you amp'd yourself up there, prior to your pressing. I can't do that any more, I am just so freaking calm, I can get a little edgy, but somewhere along this road, I lost that whole 'get angry' thing.. I just get this focus when I have the weight in my hands.. it's more of a weird, tunnel visioned, drive, with more of a cackling laugh in my head than an anger driven push.
yea, we can work out that 'answer' thing... whatever... works for me
Maybe just, you have X time to answer with equal weight, and then, it's no holds barred. 1rm, until the competitor fails the answer...? no matter who drives it first..? no answering needed with anything SUB 315.
IE: You hit 315, I answer it in a few days with a 315.
-- I then jump to a 320, you have to answer 320
-- you answer 320... still a stalemate....
.. someone has to get 325 without the opponent answering...
You have to answer with equal weight.--

I can get really amped. It only happens when I'm really dialed in, and it's genuine. I do it even if I'm training by myself, if I'm in a good place. Not like watching some dumbass in the gym trying to convince others that they are badass. I get that feeling of tunnel vision and calm for about 3 seconds before I start the set, while I'm getting my arch right. I pull the energy in, and make myself get calm, because I get sloppy with my reps if I start it too ramped up. My oldest daughter harrasses me about it the whole thing. She says it sounds like something violent is happening out in the garage. I tell her that there IS something violent happening. LOL. I prefer a home gym environment because I can let loose, and do my thing. I won't do this in most public gyms, and I think I lose something because of it. It's why I spent the money on a custom spec 10 gauge power rack, 700lb in commercial grade Cemco plates etc., even though I have a YMCA membership.
As far as the "answer" goes. I think that it needs to come within 2 days. Then, the first person to 315 has an opportunity to match it, or beat it. If matched, then the competition ends as a stalemate. If they beat it, they are the winner, with no second opportunity for the "runner up". I just think that whoever gets to 315 first, should get some advantage for the effort. . Fair enough?Last edited by Paulie_G; 12-05-2012 at 06:49 AM.

Last night was OHP and squats for me. Sore shoulders, so I went a bit light there. Squats were decent. I'm just working high volume on squats with just 225, since I'm currently hitting deads really hard. If I push on both, my knees get unhappy. Tomorrow are deads, chins and biceps. Deads are great right now. Did 335x10 last week.

A very rough 245x6....
I had one of those days today, where all the weight just feels soo heavy.. all my sets, very hard day. Still banged that **** out though
I love watching, and knowing that I did indeed push myself...
Anyhow.. onwards and upwards... next Sunday is a scheduled deload for bench (entire week is deload).. but, I am up in the air about keeping my deload scheduled for 4 weeks or 8 week intervals... the program defaults to 4.. but.. I dunno.. few days to contemplate it...--

How goes the shoulder?
And, I am fairly certain at this point that I am going to take that scheduled de-load next week.
Deads last night, 305x8 as my final 'heavy' set. New territory.. last week was 290x9.. upwards and onwards..--

Shoulder is not great. Sore, and some weakness. I'm going to have my doc look at it today, while I have him look at a mass that seems to have popped up behind my right ear. I'm hoping that isn't a big deal either. I think that the shoulder is an ongoing RSI that just cannot heal, and is now getting worse. It was bad enough that all I did was some very light work on chest and shoulders this week. Maybe he will prescribe an appropriate anti inflammatory to help clear it up, and I might try to find some things to do outside of my office for a couple of days, since typing psych reports is not helping. I'll keep you updated as I have more info. Hope to be running full strength by next Monday.
Nice on the deads. Deads is probably my strongest exercise, except maybe dips. I love them, and my max has gone up 100lb in the last 6 months. I think that if my grip strength improved, I could hit 500 over the next year, which would be about 3x BW.

GL on the shoulder....
Yea, I had a very bad lower back for the last 15 years... started doing deads.. had a rough time at first... but now things have solidified.. back is awesome, never been better, and I have no issue pushing myself with deads or other lifts. I used to have to 'walk on eggshells' with it... no longer.. good stuff...--

So, this is week one, of cycle 3.
This may seem like I lowered the weight here, but in reality, I am up from 220 on my last cycle. The videos associated with this challenge, started on my second week of cycle.. so.. next heavy set to post I think is 235 vs 230...
Either way, new PR with reps.

BAR - Get under it
Yea, a couple of my training days got shuffled around, though I still got them all in...
Feeding was horrible though... need to clean it up and get back on track...
Yea - I dunno what I am better at... really... lol... the last couple reps on that set of 12 I did, I like to think of as MAN REPS.
Funny, getting ready to press 225 is mentally more challenging to me than anything.. to push that up more than 10 reps, breaks new ground for me, mentally, and that is important. It has always been a goal of mine to rep 10 out of 225.. I never did just 10.. I did 8 a few weeks back.. and then 12 the other day. For years, every time I started working out 225 was the end goal... and... going from 220 to 225 always felt like I added a ton of weight on (mental thing).. to just fracking blow by 10 reps.. was awesome..
That line is the sand is gone.. heh.. onwards and upwards...
235 is on deck for Sunday as my heavy, all out rep set... shooting for 10... already pumping myself up for it too--

235x10
This set, I felt 'winded' early on, weird, the weight didn't come accross as super heavy, per say, I just felt winded, like I didn't have my breathing down or .. something .. either way, I got my 10 reps, that was my goal today, up 5lbs from my second week on my last cycle, same reps... solid gains continue.
I am calling this as 10 reps... that 11th rep, I had a touch of help from my passerby spotter. Worth noting, I don't think I would have gone for the 11th rep, if he wasn't there... but damn it all he was, and so, opportunity to push myself
Either way...
Today's routine:
- Bar x10 (warmup)
- 135 x5 (warmup)
- 185 x3 (3)
- 210 x3 (3)
- 235 x10 (3+)
- 150 x10 x5 sets (55% is what my BBB is set at, that is 145.. chose to do 150 today..)
Inclined DB press
- 75s x8
- 70s x8
- 65s x8
- 60s x10
Triceps...
3 exercises, 4 sets per, reps in the 8-14 range...Last edited by trev71; 12-30-2012 at 01:25 PM.

235x10 is right at 315 using some of the standard 1RM calcs.
When will you be attempting 315x1?
This is my goal as well. I'm using a MaxOT routine and I hope to try 300-315 sometime in early Feb.
ETA: And that assist by the spotter from that position probably didn't help you at all. Looks more like 235x11.Peace. I'm outta here..

I don't intend on trying it for a while, maybe Feb, though January is a long month...
I think Paulie and I both thought this was going to take much longer (and it may..), as we had goals for April/May, but, it does look as though this may come up a bit sooner. February maybe.. we'll see how things progress over the next few weeks...
This coming Sunday I have 250 on the bar... last week I had 245 and did 6 reps.. that works out to 285 (calculator).. I don't buy it.. I think I can put 295-300 up there now, confidently... but who knows.. maybe it's more right than wrong here... anyhow, I am hoping to put 250 up for 7/8. Beating 6 reps, with the added 5lbs, is a win in my eyes.
Using the 5/3/1 template, I've been adding 5lbs per month, slow and steady, and to be perfectly frank, it doesn't feel slow. I am progressing with weight, and my reps are ALWAYS equal to, or increased, from the last set of the same cycle.
I'm eyeballing February for a 315 attempt. I'll video tape and post all attempts.
Question - for Anyone...
With a 1 rep max test day, how would you progress through the weights with warm ups and the like?
bar x10..
135x5...
185 x1..
225 x1..
250 x1...
275 x1...
300 x1..
315 x1...

I would add a couple more reps at 185. Maybe 185x3 before doing the 1 rep weight acclimation sets from 225 and up.Peace. I'm outta here..
