Offshore oil field bro checking in. 28 on 14 off. Longest hitch I've ever pulled was 10 weeks away. Good money.

250 a week before i pay my rent.
after rent i have 90 bucks left over, thats barely enough for groceries. Going out, socialising, drinking, clubbing, picking up, taking a girl out? Forget it. Going to the movies sends me flat broke.
its just the nature of the beast, for some reason the government thinks aboriginals and teen mums are a good investment of tax dollars, not future scientists or doctors.Nov 04-fatass @40%bf

I'm in my fourth year of phd in electrical engineering. I definitely slack off majorly and go weeks at a time putting in 2 hour days, but it doesn't feel good. In my situation, I am pretty much on my own. Other people inherit a project, I literally had to build mine from nothing. My advisor is very hands off. So I'm not really stressed from putting in a lot of work, it's just the stress that comes with walking around blindly, with expectations of you to produce. Plus I'm paid 16k to do work that the navy is paying us 500k to do (I'm the only one on the project, write the reports, give the talks, etc), which feels a little bad since I'm drowning in med bills and don't eat breakfast and lunch to save money.
But there is some people I know whose advisors make them put in 60 hours a week, so that's gotta suck even worse.

i know the feel bro-its a full time job you dont get paid for. absolute fcking hell.
people say manual labour is daunting, i would do anything at all over working full time for a below poverty pay. Dont mind manual labour at all, its offices and daily grinds that chit meNov 04-fatass @40%bf

lol... was reading till the last part and realized that you dont actually do the job... I've done the job... sure the pay is good... I dont think they get paid enough to do what they do... I make just as much and dont have to deal with cancerous drilling fluid covering my face, the bs that goes along with people with a grade 9 education making over $100k a year, not having a break for 8 hours cuz they need to get something done..
I use my brain and some muscle to do my job now..

Lol @ thinking isolated places = working alone... random oil rig workers probably have tons of annoying ass people. I would take the job if I could find one though, do not mind any of that **** for the pay they get and getting 2 weeks off..

I have some friends in another lab who make 30k, their adviser is really cool (buys them lunch here and there, plays in their fantasy football league, actually writes the papers his name is on). So it's luck of the draw in the phd world. I would be happy with my flexible schedule, doing research, if I wasn't holding on to every penny for dear life, and didn't have to worry about writing grant proposals to make sure I keep the meager salary I do have.
