    Are weight gains not linear?

I am on a bulk. TDEE is 2900 cals. Eating 3200 cals a week. Been doing this for 4 weeks now.

Goal is to gain 0.5 lb per week.

However the frustrating thing for me is that the weight gain on the scale for me is never linear. Something like this happened:

    Week 1: no change
Week 2: weight loss of 0.4 lbs
Week 3: weight gain of 0.6 lbs
Week 4: weight gain of 2 lbs

So overall I gained 2.2 lbs in 4 weeks which is very close to my goal.

However on week 4 I gained 2 lbs. does that mean I gained mostly fat that week?

When it is said, try to gain 0.5 lb per week, does it really have to be every week?

My weight changes always comes in spurts, both while cutting and now while bulking. Anything wrong with this?

They're often nonlinear due to flux in water balance.

The average rate of gain looks pretty darn perfect. Keep monitoring, but everything looks fine to me.

The same exact thing happens to me when bulking. It's different when cutting though. I lose 1lb almost exactly every week. I wonder why that is.

Nope. It works that way for most people. There are a vast multitude of processes going on in your body that are responsible for muscle gain, and they work on their own timetable.

That's why it's so important to be consistent in your training and nutrition, even during periods of seemingly little or no progress. If the raw materials for building muscle are present in sufficient quantity, and the proper stimulus to cause growth is applied on schedule, Mother Nature will take care of the rest.
    No brain, no gain.

"The fitness and nutrition world is a breeding ground for obsessive-compulsive behavior. The irony is that many of the things people worry about have no impact on results either way, and therefore aren't worth an ounce of concern."--Alan Aragon
