I mean...you don't hear much from him , I personally believe he deserves better recognition, he was the first to break Arnold's record and still to this day, has one of the best physiques to have embraced the Olympia stage.
I don't know, it just seems he's forgotten sometimes.

Great article about the TotaLee awesome one!

Lee is like Ronnie with smaller arms, legs, & waist. I remember when he ended his career on a high note by coming in the best shape of his life, snagging his 8th Olympia & leaving Yates in 2nd place.

I don't think he's necessarily UNDERRATED, because I've heard a lot of pros mention him as one of their influences and idols, and he's also been recognized by the IFBB and the Arnold Classic. So he's gotten his due.
I just think that he's a GENTLEMAN, a great family man who just goes about his business and helping others and doesn't find himself in the middle of controversy and trouble. He lives a very straight life.
Also, you've got to realize the guy retired with 8 Olympias 21 years ago, when he was only 31 YEARS OLD. That is CRAZY.

The very essence of being underrated is that it is a _relative_ evaluation . You can be underrated at many levels, and I actually tend to agree that Lee is sort of overlooked in the grand scheme of things. To illustrate this, back when I started training I knew about Arnold (obviously), Ronnie, Yates, Levrone and even Zane, Platz and Mentzer long before I heard Haney mentioned.

The author of the article brought up an interesting point about his physique though. He never had the crazy low bodyfat% that Yates and his contemporaries would usher in. He did have an amazing shape though and relatively small arms. Makes you wonder.

x2. He wasn't underrated by judges, but by *younger* bodybuilding fans, he does seem to be. Just think of how many threads get started about legendary Olympia winners, Ronnie and Dorian always get mentioned but Lee doesn't get mentioned as much....so I always make sure to be one of the folks that does mention him
Imo, he's the epitome of what bodybuilding is about. Before Dexter won, Lee was the last person to have the right combo of size, conditioning, and proportions, at least imo. His physique was as close to perfection as one can get.

This, never heard of him till I looked at all of the Mr. Olympia's.
Now he's one of my favorites

I noticed that as well. Maybe the author Chris Lund didn't think Arnold deserved the win in 1980 LOL.

I think he gets overlooked a lot due to lack of a standout body part and the fact that he was around in a relatively boring period for bodybuilding, he pretty much dominated unopposed, if he had crazy arms or if Mendenhall had turned pro and battled him for the title every year we'd talk about him a lot more

True, the 80's saw a huge decline in bodybuilding's popularity.
And you're right, I watched an 80's bbing doc and no one came close to Lee Haney's physique. He dominated
