The Jews came in and bought land in Palestine at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century from people who were leasing it to Palestinian farmers. They then kicked the farmers off the land and created settlements. After Britain granted the Israeli's independence, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, and (I believe) Syria attacked Israel. The Israelis beat them with (ironically) German designed WWII rifles. The reason that the Israelis don't want to give the Palestinians back "their" land is the same reason that Americans don't just up and move out of their houses, hand their deeds over to the nearest Native American, and move back to Europe. We bought, stole, or conquered the land we're sitting on, and until someone else comes along who can buy, steal, or conquer it back, it's ours.

On a side note, regional Muslim powers have been trying to reconquer the lands held by the Israelis, but every time they go to war, they just lose more territory. Israel will exist forever, because the Israel is a 1st world country surrounded by 3rd world countries. I imagine that the Israelis are in a constant state of hoping one of their neighbors makes the idiot move of going to war with them, so that they can grab more land.

Please do find a refrence in any history book, including Arab ones, of a Palestinian people or state. You won't find any. In 1850 if you'd have gone and asked the Arabs living here (I'm an Israeli) what is their nationality they would have said Syrian or Lebanese or Saudi or just plain Arab, but never Palestinian as that term was later invented. Many Palsetinains even have last names that mean "The Syrian" or certain regions in the Arab world.
