    There are many STARTS and STOPS in the course of your life, but every time something stops you from reaching your goals, DON'T lose sight of your goals, just hit the RESTART button and TAKE OFF on the right path again!!

    Here’s an example of a RESTART. Maybe your career took a turn and you were forced to work overtime for a period of time and you lost sight of your health and fitness goals.     Maximizing your Cardio Efforts

    What cardiovascular program is right for YOU? Any type of cardiovascular activity or cardiovascular equipment can be effective if you keep in mind a few simple things.

    First of all, whatever type of cardio you choose must be enjoyable to YOU! If it is not enjoyable, you will not stick with it. In order for any program to be effective, you must CONSISTENTLY follow it through. Remember, it’s not WHAT you do; it’s HOW you do it and how CONSISTENTLY you do it!

    Second of all, you must set up cardio STANDARDS. Determine how much cardio you will do each session. This is you TIME standard. Then determine how many times a week you will perform your cardio training and set this as your STANDARD.
    Next, establish your HEART RATE STANDARD. Do this by determining your goal and your desired heart rate based upon that goal. If your goal is to lose body fat, target a heart rate of approximately 65 percent of your maximum heart rate. If your goal is to increase cardiovascular health, target a heart rate of approximately 80 percent of your maximum heart rate. Many cardio machines are equipped with a heart rate monitor, but consider purchasing your own heart rate monitor “watch”. You don’t need anything real fancy, a simple heart rate monitor will do. You can find one at your local sporting goods store or on-line priced as low as $25.

    Calculating your maximum heart rate is easy. Just take 220 minus your age. For example, if you are 35 years old, your maximum heart rate is 220 – 35 = 185 beats per minute (BPM).

    Your desired heart rate for fat burning would then be 185 BPM X 0.65 = 120 BPM

    Your desired heart rate for cardiovascular training would then be 185 BPM x 0.80 = 148 BPM

    CONGRATULATIONS! You have now established your cardiovascular program and standards and can move forward to your goal!

    Begin performing cardio based on these standards and continue on this program for several weeks. If you are not reaching your goals, you will know it is time to RAISE your standards by either increasing the amount of time you spend each cardio session or increasing the number of cardio sessions.

    YOUR CUTTING PROGRAM…. DON’T CUT YOUR OWN THROAT!

    When people begin a cutting program to lose body fat, they often believe they should revise their supplement program to match. This can often be your FIRST mistake.

    The same supplements you should be taking all year around; the supplements that help your body recover, increase strength, and build muscle are THE SAME supplements you should be taking during your cutting phase.

    Secondly, let’s just say that Creatine did cause you to retain water directly under your skin (bloat). Does water retention prevent you from losing body fat? NO, but IT WILL help prevent you from LOSING MUSCLE! Once you lose the body fat, you’ll lose your PERCEIVED bloat.

    It’s not JUST what you do; it’s what you do AND how you do it!

    Take lying leg curls for instance, which I prefer to refer to as lying HAM curls reminding you that you are working your hamstring muscle and NOT just moving the weight from point A to point B.

    Ask yourself, how can I get the most out of this exercise? How can I most effectively WORK THE MUSCLE? How can I most effectively stimulate new growth?

    Don’t just go for a contraction…. get a PEAK contraction! Get your hams, glutes, and lower back involved tying it all together and making it all WORK!

    Remove the QUIT option ….

    When you woke up this morning and saw snow outside your door, did you remove the QUIT option or did you jump back into bed?

    If you removed the quit option, put on your snow gear and headed off to the gym, did you remove the QUIT option AGAIN once you stepped foot inside the gym or did you SETTLE and begin talking to your friends as if just making it to the gym was a success?

    When you started in on that first lift and the weight felt HEAVY, did you remove the quit option and press forward with that weight, or did you reason that today you should lighten up and get more reps?

    Sometimes it’s okay to be a junkie….. an ADRENLINE junkie!

    Ho, hum, another boring cardio session….

    Instead of waddling through another mindless cardio session, why not CRANK UP THE INTENSITY, generate some adrenaline, and get your cardio high?!?!!

    When you first start out on that piece of cardio equipment, your body may be telling you, “Why don’t you just quit? I don’t want to do this.” FIGHT BACK!! Tell it YES YOU DO!!! Start pushing HARD; close your eyes and TAP INTO your zone.

    As you begin to DRIVE harder, you’ll see your heart rate on the monitor start to rise, you’ll feel your breathing start to get deeper….. keep pushing….. you are getting there!

    The harder you push your body, the harder it will FIGHT! When it realizes YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LET IT QUIT, it will begin to produce ADRENALINE and you’ll start to feel this cardio high!

    What does your HAIR and your PHYSIQUE have in common?

    Have you ever found yourself running late for work, and you had to sacrifice something in order to make it there on time? Maybe it was your HAIR that paid the price?     How can you MAKE progress if you haven’t DEFINED progress?
    It is important that you MONITOR your progress with SCHEDULED progress PHOTOS.

    DISCIPLINE yourself. EMPOWER yourself. Take RESPONSIBILITY and be ACCOUNTABLE for YOUR progress. I recommend, taking SCHEDULED progress photos AT LEAST once a month. Purchase a TRIPOD; learn to use the SELF-TIMER on your camera. TAKE THE POWER into YOUR OWN HANDS & don’t rely on someone else to take YOUR progress photos. This makes things SIMPLER, eliminating SCHEDULE CONFLICTS, and ELIMINATING EXCUSES for NOT following through. Take your photos at the SAME PLACE, from the same ANGLE, with the same LIGHTING, and at the approximate same time of day so you can accurately monitor your PROGRESS.

    No matter what YOUR GOALS, progress photos can help you ACHIEVE them. Taking SCHEDULED progress photos forces you to STEP UP and be ACCOUNTABLE. Be accountable to YOURSELF or find a PARTNER, a friend, or a mentor to exchange OR submit progress photos to. Progress photos HEIGHTEN your AWARENESS and make sure you are on the POSITIVE path to RESULTS!

    I schedule my PROGRESS PHOTOS the first Sunday of every month. This allows me to ENCOURAGE OTHERS and serve as a ROLE MODEL for the health & fitness lifestyle while allowing me to MONITOR my PROGRESS, ASSESS my RESULTS, and make sure I am MEETING and/or EXCEEDING my GOALS.     EFFECTIVE Methods of Progress Monitoring

    There are many different ways to monitor progress in your physique, but some are more EFFECTIVE than others. One effective method of progress monitoring is by taking scheduled progress photos as discussed in yesterday’s post. It’s true, photographs don’t lie and sometimes, WE HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT!

    Another effective means of progress monitoring is with a TAPE MEASURE. When it comes to body fat monitoring, it only takes a few critical measurements to determine if your body fat is up or down.



    A measurement at the waistline is a key indicator for both men and women since body fat is often stored around the waist regardless of gender. Women often put on weight in their hips and thighs and should consider a measurement at the hips and upper thigh just below the glute. This will allow a better assessment of body fat changes.

    Tape measurements in these areas don’t require the assistance of anyone else. The simplicity of these measurements makes you more likely to follow through. FOLLOW-THROUGH AND CONSISTENCY ARE THE KEYS! These areas also are not subject to significant changes in muscle mass; therefore, they do not allow you to inaccurately justify increases as lean muscle mass.

    Measureable changes in body fat don’t happen overnight. Consider recording tape measurements on a monthly basis as another EFFECTIVE progress monitoring tool.

    Thanks for all the POSITIVE feedback about my e-book, “10 STEPS To Take YOU in a POSITIVE direction”.

    One of the reasons I created "Positive Energy 247 Health, Beauty, & Fitness is because I know there are a lot of people out there who are looking for more positive energy in their lives. You are not alone, and I am even one of them!

    It is so easy to get caught up in dwelling on negative things in life, and when we do those negative thoughts can really dig their hooks in you & drag you down. NO FEAR!     When you look back at the end of each day, you will find yourself smiling about the great things that took place in your day. The next morning when you wake up, maybe not feeling so excited about life, you'll remember that there are all kinds of great things out there just waiting for you to find them!

    It’s like an EASTER EGG hunt! Go out and find your eggs and don’t forget to lay them too!

    Don’t lose TRACK of why you are TRACKING your progress!

    You are NOT taking progress photos, measurements, and tracking your workouts just for the sake of tracking. You are tracking your progress to get RESULTS!

    DON’T take progress photos and hide them away without comparing them to your previous photos to see how you are progressing.
    If the scale says you have gained or lost weight, look at your progress photos and see what they are telling you. For example, if your goal was to increase your weight and the scale showed you’ve met that goal, what do your progress photos tell you? WAS YOUR WEIGHT INCREASE PREDOMINANTLY LEAN MUSCLE MASS OR DID YOU ADD TOO MUCH FAT?

    If you are NOT progressing toward your goal the way you would like, your progress photos and measurements will tell you. Then, it’s YOUR JOB to do something about it! It’s your job to get RESULTS!

    YOU are in control, and YOU know what YOU want. KNOWING what you want is the first step to GETTING what you want. Now GO and GET WHAT YOU WANT!
