    HOW ARE YOU PROGRESSING WITH YOUR OFF-SEASON BULKING OR YOUR CUTTING PROGRAM?

    Are you monitoring your progress with weekly weight checks on the scale? At the beginning of October, I began my quality off-season bulking program and set the following mass gain goals:

    • October 4th- 127 pounds (Initial Weight at Start of Mass Gain Phase)
    • November 8th Target weight: 129 pounds
    • December 6th Target weight: 132 pounds
    • January 3rd Target weight: 134 pounds
    • February 7th Target weight: 136 pounds
    • March 7th Target weight: 138 pounds (ultimate target weight & date)

    What are your mass gain goals and are you achieving them? REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE TRACKING PROGRESS TO GET RESULTS! So, make sure to assess your results along the way to make sure you are on target with your goals.

    My Results Assessment:
    • November 8th Target weight: 129 pounds
    • November 8th ACTUAL weight: 128.8 pounds – I am on track with my mass gain goals! How about you?



    BUT REMEMBER, IT ISN’T ONLY THE SCALE THAT COUNTS! Make sure to take monthly measurements with a tape and monthly progress photos to better assess the gains you are making and if they are QUALITY pounds of muscle with minimal bodyfat of primarily undesirable, pointless bodyfat.

    DO YOU LOVE PUMPKIN PIE but you love your ABS too?

    Don’t make it an EITHER or SITUATION, make it BOTH!
    You CAN have your abs and pumpkin pie too! Incorporate pumpkin pie into your POST-WORKOUT meal and your lifestyle!

    Here’s how: Purchase a can of Libby’s® canned pumpkin and the ingredients needed to make a pumpkin pie that are listed on the back of the can. The exception is to substitute non-fat evaporated milk instead of the whole version to eliminate the majority of the fat. Post-workout, you want to aim for fast digesting carbs (sugar in the pie works great for this) and protein with minimal fat as fat slows down the digestion process. You want your post workout nutrients to enter your system fast and quickly begin the recovery process!

    Prepare and bake the pie according to the instructions on the can and cut the pie into eight slices. Each slice will contain the following macronutrients:
    Carbs:
    45 grams
    Fat: 7 grams
    Protein: 7 grams

    The portion size can be adjusted to meet YOUR specific post-workout carbohydrate needs. Keep in mind that the protein is minimal in pumpkin pie, and your body needs a fast digesting protein source post workout in order to build muscle. Make sure to enjoy a vanilla whey protein shake along with your pie or mix a scoop of whey protein in with two-tablespoons of fat free whip cream, top your pie with it and enjoy!

    GET OFF the rollercoaster ride! Two wrongs DON’T make a right!

    I have seen this so many times and I used to do it myself….

    Let’s say that you have been following a training & nutrition program and you have been doing really well! You’ve made progress and are really proud of yourself! Then, the Holiday season comes around. You overindulge in Thanksgiving dinner and that was before dessert even came around!

    The next morning, you wake up feeling disappointed in yourself. You’ve already BLOWN your diet or so you think. You decide to just skip breakfast. Then, you decide to change your meal plan for the day and eliminate ALL CARBS to make up for last night. And one more thing, you decide to go to the gym and do EXTRA cardio….. or maybe…. just maybe……. you skip your workout and decide that you should just QUIT!!

    STOP the rollercoaster! GET OFF that ride!! Two wrongs DON’T make a right! Overeating followed by under-eating & excess cardio DOESN’T make it right and it SETS YOU UP for a REPEATING cycle, a rollercoaster ride, preventing you from reaching your GOALS.



    BREAK THE CYCLE! Throw that ROLLERCOASTER for a LOOP! Get right back on your SCHEDULED eating and training program WITHOUT any further deviations from YOUR PLAN! If you are not hungry for breakfast the morning after an evening cheat meal or any other meal, EAT HALF YOUR MEAL ANYWAY! Follow your SCHEDULED training and nutrition program and continue to eat SMALL, SCHEDULED meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism running at FULL SPEED and to regain the BALANCE of your insulin and hormone levels and STABILIZE your emotions.

    DON’T try to compensate with excess cardio which only REINFORCES a way of thinking that overeating can be JUSTIFIED and corrected by overtraining and excess cardio. Two “overages” create an OVERLOAD!

    What about the GUILT? You’ll find the QUICKEST way to DROP IT is to follow through with your SCHEDULED program WITHOUT BEING SIDETRACKED BY ANY ROLLER COASTER RIDES! And remember to love yourself!

    With Thanksgiving behind you, the start of a new month, and Holiday parties just ahead, it is the perfect time to take your monthly progress photos and make sure aren’t looking like a Butterball now or by the end of the month!!

    What you look like the first of December can be quite different from what you look like at the end of December with all the Holiday treats IF you do not stay focused on proper nutrition, your health and fitness goals, and constantly monitor your progress and your RESULTS!

    On October 1st, I started my quality off-season mass gain or “bulking” program and invited YOU to join me in your own Physique quest. At the start of my off-season mass gain program, I took initial progress photos and have been taking subsequent progress photos the first weekend of every new month. I encourage YOU to do the same! It’s true, photographs don’t lie, and seeing it is a very ACCURATE and EFFECTIVE way of monitoring your progress and your RESULTS.

    My October progress photos not only mark the beginning of my mass gain program, but also the rebuilding of my right bicep. I had surgery August 15th to repair a distal bicep tendon tear in my right bicep and was unable to train the right side of my upper body for a 7 week period of physical therapy & rehabilitation. During this 7 week period, I used unilateral training of my upper body, continued with legs work as usual, cardiovascular activity, and proper nutrition.

    The following are comparison progress photos from the start of my quality mass gain program in October to my current progress photos this month. Remember, it’s always YOU against YOU!

    • SCHEDULED progress photos AT LEAST once a month.
    • Purchase a TRIPOD from a department store such as Best Buy and learn to use the SELF-TIMER on your camera this allows you to…….
    • TAKE THE POWER into YOUR OWN HANDS & don’t rely on someone else to take YOUR progress photos. This makes things SIMPLER, eliminating SCHEDULE CONFLICTS, and ELIMINATING EXCUSES for NOT following through.
    • Take your photos at the SAME PLACE, from the same ANGLE, with the same LIGHTING, and at the approximate same time of day so you can accurately monitor your PROGRESS.

    No matter what YOUR GOALS, progress photos can help you ACHIEVE them. Taking SCHEDULED progress photos forces you to STEP UP and be ACCOUNTABLE. Be accountable to YOURSELF or find a PARTNER, a friend, or a mentor to exchange OR submit progress photos to.     My official "IFBB Pro Card" arrived in the mail yesterday. It was a monumental moment as it took me 14 years to reach this goal and there were times I wasn't sure I'd ever achieve it, but I never gave up the fight. In fact, it took me six years of competing before the thought that I could be an IFBB pro ever entered my head. What if I would have began competition with this goal in mind? How much quicker could I have achieved it? Do you have a goal? Maybe its time to set one so you can get there faster!

    No matter what YOUR goal, the road won't always be easy, but with motivation, dedication, persistence, and determination you can succeed!

    Your words are POWERFUL and they CAN make a difference in someone else’s life!

    In 1999, I was competing for the first time as an amateur at the Jan Tana Classic where I first met IFBB Pro Denise Gerard, a new IFBB pro who was up and coming in the pro ranks. She was competing at the Jan Tana Classic as well, but in the IFBB Pro Women’s Bodybuilding division and signing autographs.



    In 2002 I met Denise Gerard again, but this time at the Virginia/DC Drug-Free Championships where I was competing and Denise was judging. At the evening competitor’s meeting, I crossed Denise’s path, and she made it a point to tell me that I really looked good that morning on stage. THOSE WORDS, REALLY MEANT SOMETHING TO ME. This was the first time a judge or an IFBB pro encouraged me and MADE ME FEEL LIKE I HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL INSIDE ME. I won the Overall as a Middleweight that day. It was my first Overall win, my first State show win, and like Denise’s words, it meant a lot to me.



    I continued to compete, read, and learn as much about training, nutrition, and competition prep as I could. However, in 2006, I wanted to find out what I didn’t know, so I set out in search of a coach. One of the first people that came to mind was Denise Gerard BECAUSE OF HER WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT to me at the Virginia/DC Drug-Free Championships.

    My first competition with Denise as my coach was the 2007 Team Universe. This was my third year competing at the National level and at the Team Universe. It was also the first time I placed outside the top five. The Team Universe was a tough competition with competitors getting better every year, but that didn’t make placing outside the top five any easier. If you have ever placed outside the top five, you know it can be DISHEARTENING because you don’t get the opportunity to perform your evening routine, you walk away without a trophy, and you CAN FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WALKING AWAY WITH NOTHING to show for all your hard work.

    Once again, DENISE ENCOURAGED ME, she told me to BE PROUD of myself, and encouraged me to get up on a pedestal outside the auditorium and take pictures APPRECIATING THE CONDITION I HAD ACHIEVED, and CELEBRATE CREATING THE BEST ME! I kept the picture that she took AND her words of encouragement, and they have always meant a lot to me.



    For the next few years, I continued competing with Denise as my coach, and in 2008, it was time for us to win! I took the Overall at the NPC Pittsburgh Bodybuilding Championships which was a title I had been working towards for years. At this show, Denise taught me THE POWER OF SOMEONE BELIEVING IN ME and the POWER OF SELF-BELIEF! As a lightweight, the chance of winning the Overall title was slim, but Denise believed in me and I did win!



    She also reminded me to APPRECIATE THE JOURNEY and CELEBRATE THE MOMENT as she took me into the hallway with my trophies to DOCUMENT THE WIN! After just stepping off stage, it’s easy to lose sight of appreciating the moment because you just want to jump in the shower and get off that tan and that suit!



    A month later, we won again, this time at the 2008 Jr USA in the lightweight class. The next morning, I had to head out of town early, but before I left town, Denise greeted me with a celebration flower hand-picked just for me. I brought the flower back home, and placed it in water by my trophies before taking another appreciation of the moment photograph. Her flower taught me THE IMPORTANCE OF A SUPPORT TEAM, THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDS, AND THAT THE “LITTLE THINGS” THAT PEOPLE DO CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!!



    Just last week I heard of Denise’s passing this past spring. DENISE TAUGHT ME A LOT OF THINGS, AND I BELIEVE IN SHARING WHAT I LEARN FROM OTHERS. I also believe that IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO SAY THANK YOU, and you can never say thank you too many times.
    It’s also a good reminder that YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT’S YOUR TURN TO CHECK IN TO HEAVEN, SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY AND HAVE GOD AT THE FOREFRONT OF YOUR LIFE.

    2014 is a New Year, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be obstacles in your path. The question is, “HOW WILL YOU HANDLE THE OBSTACLES IN YOUR PATH?”

    Will you find a way to go around them, break through them, and overcome them or will they deter you from your path?

    EACH DAY, YOU HAVE DECISIONS TO MAKE THAT WILL GREATLY IMPACT YOUR SUCCESS. This morning, you had a choice to make. Would you go to the gym and keep your training schedule? Was the drive in worth your gas? Would you settle for training at home where your intensity may have been less?

    This morning, as I headed down my path, I had a physical obstacle in my way.



    I could have easily chosen to turn around, head back home, abandon my training session or settle for a less intense session at home. But, this obstacle, was more than just a tree in my path. This obstacle on the first day of the New Year symbolized my mindset and how I would handle the obstacles that will undoubtedly lie ahead in my path this year.

    I chose to overcome, to find a way,
    which also set the mindset and my standard for this year. What choice will you make? Remember, your biggest obstacles are often your biggest opportunities to succeed.

    HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR INITIAL PROGRESS PHOTOS FOR 2014 and are you still on target with your quality off-season bulking program?!!

    If you plan on progressing your physique this year, and I am sure you do, MAKE CERTAIN to document your starting point so at the end of the year you can measure just how far you’ve come!!! This is YOUR year filled with OPPORTUNTY to live, love, be happy & succeed!

    The fall and winter months are the perfect opportunity to gain some QUALITY mass and THE START OF A NEW YEAR IS THE PERFECT TIME TO SET NEW GOALS!! The key is to stay focused on gaining QUALITY mass without excess body fat. This is achieved through CONSISTENTLY following a QUALITY nutrition PLAN and not by a random increase in calories including non-quality sources!

    On October 1st, I started my off-season mass gain (“bulking” program) and invited YOU to join me in your own Physique quest! At the start of my program, I took initial progress photos and have been taking subsequent photos the first weekend of every new month. I encourage YOU to do the same! It’s true, photos don’t lie, and seeing it is a very ACCURATE and EFFECTIVE way of monitoring your progress and your RESULTS.

    My October progress photos not only mark the beginning of my mass gain program, but also the rebuilding of my right bicep. I had surgery August 15th to repair a distal bicep tendon tear in my right bicep and was unable to train the right side of my upper body for a 7 week period of physical therapy & rehabilitation. During this 7 week period, I used unilateral training of my upper body, continued with legs work as usual, cardiovascular activity, and proper nutrition.



    The following are progress photos documenting my progress from the start of my mass gain program in October to my current RESULTS! My current progress photos also mark the start of the New Year 2014 and THE YEAR OF MY IFBB PHYSIQUE PRO-DEBUT!!

    Remember, it’s always YOU against YOU! The question is:
    “Is the you of TODAY winning and will the new you still be winning at the end of the year?!?”









    The following are my guidelines for taking EFFECTIVE progress photos:

    • SCHEDULED progress photos AT LEAST once a month.

    • Purchase a TRIPOD from a department store such as Best Buy and learn to use the SELF-TIMER on your camera this allows you to…….

    • TAKE THE POWER into YOUR OWN HANDS & don’t rely on someone else to take YOUR progress photos. This makes things SIMPLER, eliminating SCHEDULE CONFLICTS, and ELIMINATING EXCUSES for NOT following through.

    • Take your photos at the SAME PLACE, from the same ANGLE, with the same LIGHTING, and at the approximate same time of day so you can accurately monitor your PROGRESS.

    No matter what YOUR GOALS, progress photos can help you ACHIEVE them. Taking SCHEDULED progress photos forces you to STEP UP and be ACCOUNTABLE. Be accountable to YOURSELF or find a PARTNER, a friend, or a mentor to exchange OR submit progress photos to. Progress photos HEIGHTEN your AWARENESS and make sure you are on the POSITIVE path to RESULTS!

    The year 2013 was full of blessing as is EVERY DAY of our lives. The key is to remember to look around with our eyes OPEN WIDE in search of all the gifts that abound!

    Are you RUNNING but not sure where you are RUNNING TO, HOW FAR you have come, or WHY you are running the RACE?

    Don’t underestimate the value of taking a SCHEDULED week off training.
    A SCHEDULED week off training gives your BODY and your MIND the time it needs to properly recover and OPTIMIZE your gains. Use your recovery week to REFLECT on your progress, RECOGNIZE the results you are making, and EXPAND your mind!

    Most importantly, remember to ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY to greatness and your well-deserved time off! Everyone’s ultimate goal in life is to be happy and therefore it is a MUST that you enjoy your journey in order to stay on track!



    THIS SCHEDULED WEEK OFF TRAINING IS ALSO A GREAT TIME TO EVALUATE YOUR PROGRAM AND YOUR GOALS. Revise and refine them as needed to hone in on EXACTLY what you want and make sure you KNOW exactly what it is you want. Make sure you are running in a straight line, in the right direction, and to a set destination point and NOT just running around!

    During your recovery week, make sure you maintain your schedule eating and supplementation program just like any other week. Even though you are not training, your body needs these things to OPTIMIZE your recovery.

    Take the time to EVALUATE your current nutrition and training program during your scheduled week off training.
