Ok, what the hell is this thing?

There's a thread in the misc right now trying to identify exactly what this machine is for. Apparently no one at the gym including the staff has any idea... lol

I've been a member at the gym for over 2 years. I've asked all the staff and all the trainers, I'm a trainer myself and have no clue. I've never seen anybody, not even once, use it or go near it in the 2+ years I've been at a member at this Gold's Gym.

My mind has been and is still blown.

I'll tell ya this much though, most of the guys hang their towels and belts on it because no one knows what it is LOL

It looks like a smith machine that you can put your choice of bar or dumbells into.

could it be an older version of what they call teh "smith press attachment". The bars are flipped inwards where the plates would ride.

Thank you for your email and interest in TuffStuff Fitness Equipment.

The item in your picture is called a Power Spot. We manufactured this item for a short time approximately 10 years ago.

The design allowed the safe use of heavy dumbbells for various pressing exercises. Lifters could position the handles at a desired staring point and lock their dumbbells into the sliding saddles. The saddles could then move in any direction and when the lifter had completed his set or failed at a rep he could then set the dumbbells down on the safety catches. This eliminated the need for the weights to be picked up and set down on the floor after each set and allowed lone lifters the benefit of a safety stop, if a spotter was not present.

From the photos, it looks there's a spot for your hand to fit in the middle. Still, I'd be worried about not getting it centered and pinching or crushing part of my hand.

Pick up dumbbell with both hands and set it into cradle and lock in place pick up second dumbbell with both hands and lock into cradle. Do set.

That's a video of Power Spot in action. I found it a while ago while searching for spotting system. Initially, I thought it was just another power rack/half rack attachment. Didn't know Tuff Stuff actually made it into a commercial product.

Since nobody at the gym knows what it is, is it located anywhere near the dumbbell rack(s)? It would suck to have to carry heavy dumbbells clear across the gym just to use the spotter.

i could see why someone would use it but honestly sometimes when i bench without a spotter and i go for 1 more rep, knowing ill struggle like hell to get it, and i grind it out its possibly one of the best feelings knowing you had to put every single ounce of energy to get the rep. but with this thing people would just go to failure all day and never make gains

To me, the bigger "problem" is that it doesn't appear to do anything that can't be done with a $50 pair of Power Hooks.

well, You can fail without having to drop the dumbbells... maybe for a guy with shoulder problems it could be a nice addition. for a barbell though... a power rack and some well placed safety bars render the thing useless.

Ah, I see. On first glance I though it was just an apparatus to hold some adjustable dumbbell cradles, but now I see it's kinda like a jones machine for dumbbells.

Thanks, cool picture. And it actually works quite well - full range of motion, start lift anywhere and end anywhere, no unracking/racking, no need to swing the bars up into position, and when you fail, just release the bar (it will stay just where you let go) and go out for a smoke.
