I'm not sure we should be encouraging him anyway. There are two schools of thought here. One is that he is going to post here anyway, so we might as well help him become better at it. The other is that regardless of whether he continues to post, he still needs to STFU and GTFO.

I'm going to have to mull this over. The grating entrance and resulting backlash that AnnoyingDoucheson caused when he started posting here failed to deter him, so I think the former is the best we can do to help ourselves while helping others. But, I will sleep on it.

Yeah, take your time. It's a compelling philosophical question and one we're faced with every time someone inexplicably forces their self on the thread when they aren't wanted. It seems the standard practice is to shrug our shoulders and accept that we're stuck with them. I'm usually one of the last holdouts whenever this happens. I do my best to remain faithful to the cause.

First of all, this country has constantly redefined what's practical or realistic. Again and again. Spare me the can't-do.

I refuse to both believe that I'm so out-of-the-loop quixotic or that you're completely glass-half-empty misanthropic.

It's because you're acting like there's some magic actions that can take place to fix the problem, and frankly I've yet to hear you propose anything that's remotely concrete or would have any meaningful effect. Psychological profiles for all of America? Having 1 cop for every citizen? Hooking everyone into the Matrix and just living in virtual reality?

High horses are fun to ride, but the carrousel just goes round-and-round without getting anywhere.

I'd be particularly interested in actually getting definitions for the terms he has introduced, such as "assault rifle" or "illegal guns". Or maybe an explanation for why mandated training would do a damn thing to help prevent this.

It's also interesting to note that the police officers I've talked with are pretty much 100% in favor of civilians having guns, if done so legally and with a degree of training. I would have thought that of any group, they'd be the most opposed to anyone but themselves owning firearms. The local Concealed Carry class is actually taught by police.

But they, too, realize that citizens legally owning and complying with laws aren't the threat.

Police officers seen enough to know what the real world is actually like, and to know what happens when the law abiding are unarmed, and the criminals know they are unarmed.

b. Equip every cop in America with a patrol rifle. One chief of police, upon getting rifles for all his officers once said, “If an active killer strikes in my town, the response time will be measured in feet per second.”
c. Put smoke grenades in the trunk of every cop car in America. Any infantryman who needs to attack across open terrain or perform a rescue under fire deploys a smoke grenade. A fire extinguisher will do a decent job in some cases, but a smoke grenade is designed to perform the function.
d. Have a “go-to-war bag” filled with lots of loaded magazines and supplies for tactical combat casualty care.
e. Use helicopters. Somewhere in your county you probably have one or more of the following: medivac, media, private, national guard, coast guard rotors.
f. Employ the crew-served, continuous-feed, weapon you already have available to you (a firehouse) by integrating the fire service into your active shooter training. It is virtually impossible for a killer to put well-placed shots on target while also being blasted with water at 300 pounds per square inch.
g. Armed citizens can help. Think United 93. Whatever your personal take on gun control, it is all but certain that a killer set on killing is more likely to attack a target where the citizens are unarmed, rather than one where they are likely to encounter an armed citizen response.

I had to. Calculus. I went to every single damn class and still only got a C. At least I lived in the dorms so I didn't have to worry about traffic or any real variables in how long it took to get to class, and could get up at about 7:15
