ELECTRIC cars and hybrids are set to be required by law to make a humming noise when travelling at low speeds - to prevent deaths and injuries of elderly or vision impaired pedestrians in shopping centres and car parks.

In a landmark submission filed overnight the peak road safety authority in North America recommended external speakers become compulsory on all electric vehicles and hybrids from 2016.

True, but the idea is still amusing.

A few years from now a future Prius model with racing stripes will be rumbling like an old Mustang.

Looking into the George Jetson-like future, I can see it now, a tacky little console with 'Choose Your Favorite Car Sounds From Yesteryear' buttons.

Some cars already pump in artificial engine sounds (Sadly, it's former "real" car company BMW).

It's sad that a car with nearly 600hp needs engine noise pumped into the cabin but then emissions/noise laws have sucked the life out of exhaust notes.

But cabin noise is one thing, making sounds externally is a lot worse.

On a serious note, judging speed will be a lot more difficult without engine noise and changing gears.

I'll say, I almost got hit by a Prius in a Petsmart parking lot awhile back because I never heard a thing. They were pulling forward out of the spot, had no lights on, and didn't look where they were going. If there had been any kind of engine noise, OR tire noise (low rolling resistance/hard/narrow tires a factor?), I would have realized sooner.

Yes, BMW has pussified their cars. Most have.

As someone who's owned a couple of BMW's in the past, I can't say there's one that interests me now. They keep adding weight, useless gadgets, and doing things like adding electronic steering racks which ruin some of what made the cars great in the first place. It's been downhill since the E46 3-Series and E-39 5-Series, IMO. BMW has jumped the shark.

And in the meantime the Rant's Brain Trust will tackle the hard-hitting stuff that keeps us awake at night like finding a suitably nice cheese at Wegmans to furnish a platter for when unexpected guests arrive.

No. The end product is what is important - i.e. how it tastes.

I don't know enough about cars to know if that translates (does how it sounds affect how it runs, etc.)

IIRC, the e46 had a fly by wire steering as well.

I remember those. Sadly they're still around.

I'm sure sales are better than ever so they surely appeal to those who care more about the badge and gadgets and less about the overall driving experience they built their reputation on.

Probably not, but it's not "legit". Things like the Mustang using a "sound tube" to route engine noise to the cabin is fine, IMO, since it's the real engine noise only tuned to eliminate the noise when you don't want it while allowing the engine to be heard when you hit the gas. Making artificial "zoom zoom" noises with the stereo? Give me a break.

You'd really be okay with a beer that wasn't actually beer, but instead something just flavored to taste like beer? Or beer where someone essentially took a budweiser and added dark food coloring and artificial hops flavor to make it look & taste different?

    Unfortunately.

I've said it before I think, but I remember talking with my service adviser. We were discussing BMW switching to the TT V8 for the new big engines, switching from the high revving V10. I asked why and he said because the V10 was "too rough". I stared blankly. That is the sign of all the old M-Cars. High revving, high compression naturally aspirated engines, that BMW engineers managed to get all the power they could out of a block.

He said "Very true, but.. the most common buyer of an M5 or M6 isn't a mid-twenties enthusiast, it is usually a 45+ year old business man who wants to purchase the most expensive car in the line."
He said the main reason for the twin turboed V8 is that it is as smooth as a 525 from the moment you start it up. Just fire it up and go. No high compression roughness (while cold) or anything.

There are plenty of features I can do without on my Corolla: the seat belt alarm, the tire pressure monitoring system, and the damn traction control.

I have 6 air bags, but abit skeptical about their effectiveness. When I wrecked my Focus in '07, mine didn't go off and yet caused $7,000 worth of damage. My front end received most of the damage (the crumble zone was effective).

Every time it snows, I see damn SUVs stuck in a ditch as the first vehicles stranded in a snow storm.

My brakes work alright, but not the best. Then again, it's knowing ones own car that works.

I refused to buy a damn Smart car. Those are the last things I want to be in in a crash.

Along the same lines, I despise those idiots who insist on having mufflers that make their cheap-arse import sound like a rice cooker. It's usually the ghetto type that have either low-riding wheels or lift kits on said cars.

Pretty sure it was still hydraulic. But either way, I think it's been downhill since that generation for a number of other reasons as well. The only thing the 3-series improved after the E46 was the addition of the 335 engine. That's a great mill.

Sadly, the inline-6 looks like it's going to be put out to pasture due to CAFE, at least in the base cars. A 3-series with a 4-cylinder? No thanks.

People have different definitions of "artificial." I wasn't sure exactly what you meant in this case. To some people, anything outside of hops, malt, water and yeast is an unacceptable additive. These people are confused.

It's a shame and that is definitely the target market, which is even worse over here because they cost 3x as much so your typical M buyer cares more about the fact it cost $150K+ than what kind of performance it offers.

The next M3 will most likely be a twin-turbo six. I loved that high-revving N/A inline six on the E46 M3 and your V10 of course is unique. V8s and turbo sixes are a dime a dozen. To be fair, 0-60 times in the low-mid 4s are now the benchmark and only a big engine or a turbo are going to meet that requirement without AWD. Of course 0-60 times aren't everything but that spec sells cars.

Seatbelt alarms are moronic. I had a 2L bottle of Coke on my passenger seat the other day under a jacket which I'd forgotten about and while I'm driving, every couple of minutes I heard a really short beep, but looked at the dash and saw nothing. Next set of lights I double checked my doors were shut. Kept driving and a couple of minutes later it did it again. Short faint beep. I look down and see the bottle and toss it on the back seat. Problem solved.

Seriously, when did engineers decide that a person sitting in the front seat might weigh less than 5lbs?

Agreed! I hate the seat belt alarms. I forget what it was, but one time i was driving, the car was full adn I put a bag (it was more than a 2L bottle of soda at least)in the front seat. Apparentyl it triggered the alarm and I was driving down the road listening to that damn alarm go off every few seconds until I reached my destination.

I would have just put the seat belt over the bottle. If you get into an accident, the coke won't fly through the windshield and you will have tasty beverage to enjoy while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.
