I think MMO's really benefit from a sense of community. When your server gets too huge and population flooded, the sense of community falls apart and the game loses something. When you recognize the other characters you see in the game world, these games can be really powerful, but the cross-server garbage and the huge server mentality leads to a lot of excessive number crunching, min maxing, and so on. Bad behavior leading to bad server reps is generally non existent. Server transfers, name changes, penalty-less deaths.
The way characters are very throw-away also encourages Blizzard to go entire expansions without addressing PvP issues. You are really pressured to play a flavor of the month character and, even worse, you are encouraged to have one for PvP and a different one for PvE.
I loved vanilla and TBC. I also went nuts over Everquest - original, Velious, and Luclin.01/07/06 - Quit Drinking. 03/15/08 - Quit Smoking.

I read an article where hardcore MMO gamers are the most likely to succeed in fitness bodybuilding because of the dedication, seems pretty true lol

Don't know about this. I work as a personal trainer and I have had a couple clients who were WOW players. In both cases they were man-children who were literally being forced by their mothers to train or risk losing their WOW account. They had ZERO motivation and would complain about everything.
Also, I agree the cross-server thing absolutely ruined the sense of community of WOW. In The Burning Crusade and Vanilla it was like some of the people on the server were brothers. There was that one alliance or horde player who was your nemesis, there were friendly rivals, it was really like being in a village.

I agree, but I did feel that there were a few things needing changed, for instance, a warrior HAD to be MT for progression and pally was only useful for certain things. I was the guy who had the 3 hybrid alts for progress, a druid, pally and priest, and although I was always along for progression, every encounter I was running out to get an alt to fill another role. It was fun, but my alts never geared up like other players, and I didn't always feel "needed". That crap was expensive as hell too, because think of all the gems and chants I needed for them all. I had an officer lecture me once that my druid wasn't chanted up with the best chants. What a dik. I literally had no gold left.

Ive been clean for years.....thanks to this damned thread I am contemplating reactivating my acct, I hate all of you (not srs)......my feels have had their jimmies b-rezzed
You will never experience the epic progression of the game like us old guard did. Vanilla and BC were king.
However, If you want an amazing experience, one you cannot get from anything else...exploring a fantasy world that is bigger than you can imagine, play the game
but keep in mind and be warned...if you get sucked in, expect to kiss the next year, or two...or 4 down the drain. WoW is a brilliant business plan/strat that gives gamers the biggest sense of false accomplishment...its fun, its entertaining...but you will be sad when you get your phat purplz, arena rating, etc etc....that NO ONE in the real world cares...and you're wasting your time.
That being said, I played for 4 years and regret none of it....it was a badas* experience and I got to play with a ton of IRL friends. My quality of life suffered but I feel like its made me appreciate not playing...even more.
If you can play with moderation....win win. GL3x Nationally qualified MPD - Donut Eater - Coffee Drinker - Breakfast Food Advocate

I created my WoW account 11/29/2004, about a week after it launched.
I made a dwarf hunter, took me a week to get to level 20, looool. Was my first MMO.
I remember seeing a hunter with a pet and I was talking to him, asking how he got the pet and he was like 'is this real life'. So he showed me where to start the quest. I was level 20 at the time. Been doing everything without a pet.
Anyways, I learned a few friends of mine played on the horde side of Deathwing. So, I went to their server and made a troll shaman. I still play from time to time. It's just not fun anymore.onion crew

I started back up with this new expansion. Run a 10m guild, while still maintaining a normal life. You just have to surround yourself with like-minded individuals in the game.
In my case, I play 3x a week for 3 hours to raid, Tu/Th/Sun. We go in, slay some dragons and ****, talking about random stuff, then we log off. I'll play a little bit here and there as well if I'm bored. We're fairly successful, given we started up with the expansion ( 1/6H MV, 4/6HoF ).
The rest of the week, I'm focuses on work, friends and hitting up the gym. It's all about balancing your life and making time for things you find enjoyable.Because if it were easy, I wouldn't be interested.

I never played WoW, I wish I did though.
I love the idea of just exploring new areas and cool ****. I feel like it's too late to get into the game now though..will probably check out Blizzards next MMO, whatever it may be.Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.
