This is just for fun, i'm interested to hear what everyone is studying or studied.
I'm at my third year of university and i'm an English Major with focus on Writing Specialization. It is a fairly new major at my school, but it basically focuses on all fields of writing: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, journalism, business writing, literature
My minor is critical studies, which is film and media analysis.
I'm pretty much screwing myself over for an actual career, unless I want to teach, but writing has always been my passion. That's why I really want to try to get a Master's too, but that ****s expensive.
How about everyone else?

Not at all . . . there are plenty of ways to apply that passion and those skills in the business world (if you don't ultimately end up in a "writing career" per se). The ability to communicate effectively in writing and the skills that also hones with verbal communication opens up all sorts of options.
I was an English major and had a creative writing concentration, too . Got my master's in applied communication a few years later. After college I worked in marketing for a few years, but through a series of what ended being opportune circumstances I have been working in sales operations . . . where I'm a crm administrator. The writing and communication skills come in very handy in my role and lets me branch out quite a bit.
So don't think you are painting yourself into a corner. You can do much more than teach with that background. But then you also have teaching to fall back on if you want to (or need to).*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*

I'm currently in school to for my RD (registered dietician) and may minor in kineisology once I transfer to a university. If things workout I might even go for my masters or a PHD, but like you said that shiz is expensive lol
If this were easy, everyone would walk around ripped.

You make a valid point; there are def a lot of jobs outside being a typical writer. This quarter i'm taking a English grammar course, which is hell by the way. My teacher always points out how good communication skills are important for any job, and he's known people who have not hired employees just for using poor grammar.
What's crazy about my school, is the journalism program does not require any type of grammar studies, which is ridiculous.
My dream job is to be a film critic for the Seattle Times but that's a long shot haha.

Public Administration major, (think business and political science with a focus on how government functions, not the politics)
MIS minor. Was a Spanish minor for a while and almost finished it till I switched to MIS this year. Will probably be looking into a job in MIS after I graduate.Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one's potential.

So, what software do you work with? The hospital I'm at now uses Paragon...the last place used Meditech. I had to call them with a question one time. I told them the medication I was having an issue with and he asked me for the alias. I was all WTF...it was like we were talking two different languages the entire time...I am soooo not computer savvy lol. Felt like a real idiot after that convo.

The software we've created that the nurses and cnas use is called MedRight and CareRight. The pharmacy software we interface with is QS1 and Frameworks. The pharmacists use the QS1 or Frameworks software to enter the med/patient information and we consume that information via HL7 to use in our MedRight software that nurses/cnas use inside their facilities("homes").
Our software pretty much displays when Meds, Treatments, and Procedures are due. Along with a ton of other things, but passing meds is really the meat of it. It's very complicated. When you start having holds, postpones, rerolled meds, dced meds, destroyed narcotics, multi-tabs, max doses, etc... It's easy to see why there isn't a ton of options for this type of software.
We built it over the last 4 years with a Pharmacy backing us and we have about 10 Pharmacy companies that use us. Each company has many homes as their customers that then become our customers.
I built 75% of CareRight myself which is used to track MDS 3.0 information on patients sent to the gov.
I built about 20% of MedRight myself which is the main medication software. I've put a lot of time and effort into these, so I'm hoping it grows faster than it has been. We'll see. I'd love our company to turn into a multi million dollar one where I can make huge money somedayLast edited by Wyomann; 11-20-2012 at 09:21 AM.

Oh, try to stay in writing; I wish I had. It was my passion, too. I was a journalism major for a time, then switched to elem ed, w/minor in english. I have been in business/sales for a long time, and while I enjoy it, it would have been interesting to see where writing might have taken me. Hindsight's 20/20, eh?
Good luck to you with this!

Commence the laughter... I have a "Bachelor of General Studies" with certification to teach English as a second language. I wish I had done the BEd instead, but I did a career change halfway through and that was the only option without losing two years of credits.
Fortunately I can still get work (teaching ESL) but it wasn't the best choice in hindsight.

Awesome! After ruling out Med school, I narrowed it down to Pharm or Vet. Do you practice in large or small animal?
I had planned to do 2 years of residency after graduation...but, husband's job opportunity moved us 2 hours from closest residency program. Fortunately, I am still able to do a good bit of clinical work as I am employed at a non-teaching hospital."I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." ~Philippians 4:13

Bachelors in computer information systems. Thinking about going back for something completely different. Experience is killing my wife and I. I can't get a good job without it so I work as a contractor at a data center and my wife has a bachelors in biology (originally wanted to go to dental school but did not get accepted) and she is a receptionist at a speech/occupational therapy clinic.
