Holy sh*t Batman, I'm sore!
Its cold and loads of snow on the ground...I took a cab to the gym...normally a 15 min. walk...not today with my hamstring DOMS.
I picked chest obliteration today, always have based my training around DOMS and rest.
I'll be climbing up hills again so I chose some lighter weights to ease into things without crippling myself and while keeping an eye out for my bum left shoulder.
The church bells ring and we are off to...
F.S.U.U!!
incline DB Flye
20x20, 20x25, 20x30
10x40, 8x50, 6x60
incline BB Bench
20x45(bar), 20x45
8x95-shoulder problems
15x95- a 2nd run to see if I could isolate better, it worked
2x145
5x145- I haz a temporary shame
10x95-more shoulder problems
and that's enough of that
move on to something that DOESN'T cause me grief
Hammer Strength dip machine, PWO
20x90, 15x180, 20x180
6x270-damn near broke me
standing cable Flye
27x40
Flyes-isolate and warm up, pre-exhaust
BB Press- incline work is the way to go for bb'ing competitors, I need these at a decent weight
dip machine- can use lots of weight and it doesn't bother my shoulder
cable flye- mimics the mm pose and there is nothing a bb'er likes more than doing a mm, so I found an exercise that I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone
A good day in the gym with my cohorts.
The week day warriors seem to be the issue.

Working with Mike is really cool. He is a great guy and he has me training like I have never done before, so I am learning lots. Squatting, deadlifting and benching three times a week as an example. The routine changes every week so it keeps things challenging and interesting and I am learning you don't have to lift to failure to make gains, that's a big one for me as I have always trained balls to the wall up until now.
Just as a FYI I stopped getting DOMS and feeling sore by training each body part more often then once a week when I swtiched to doing Layne's PHAT system.
I know its tough working through shoulder pain, I too have been battling some as well. I sprained my right shoulder AC joint about 6 months ago and now it looks like I have done something similar on the left. Its slowly getting better especailly by taking care to warm up properly and doing some rehab / rotator cuff exercises and making sure I bench using powerlifting form instead of bb style. I think doing BB style is how I hurt it originally as it puts a lot of stress on the shoulders."We all have great inner power. The power is self-faith. There's really an attitude to winning. You have to see yourself winning before you win. And you have to be hungry. You have to conquer."

Yep.
He's probably the most vocal (and qualified) spokesman for using ACTUAL SCIENCE to move bodybuilding progress forward. But I often smh at the occasional negativity in the O35 towards any kind of science-based information or advice. I see very little of that attitude anywhere else on this site, which is perplexing to me.No brain, no gain.

We are much alike...it scares me.
I have learned much from you and do look up to you.-srs
Despite the shoulder issues, we still soldier on.
Happy weekend Jim!
Sounds like training is going as it should, interesting and effective. Great news and I'm glad you like working with him!
I made my best gains after 30, not doing soo much work as I was previous.
I have ALWAYS had/have DOMS, even after 24 years in the gym. For me, its a way of training life.
I perversely like it.
My shoulder has been fawked since my 20's...I just worked around it for so long I forgot I had it when it was time to bring up my chest.
I've done everything but surgery for it and I'm not interested in that. lol
The irony of this is that in this vid Layne mentions he does not have the science to back it up but has seen enough clients to have developed this theory.
Imo, it is sound.
I have thought about your post and why, as I am one of those you speak of...at times.
We (as in you, me, many of the over 35) were exposed to bodybuilding when there was no science behind anything.
When the scientific revolution hit all of a sudden numerous gym myths were proven true...squats are awesome, creatine is safe, 'roids won't outright kill ya...etc. etc.
They proved what we believed.
And by society depending on science and "proof" they took out one of the most oft overlooked components of lifting, the spirit...or will.
By not acknowledging this as a factor they have, in my mind and the minds of some others, become part of the problem as they are missing that component just as the "faithful" miss the scientific component.
Science and belief in will need to meet somewhere in bodybuilding and come to a consensus. and not in the middle, for I concede that sceince has more power and truth than belief. 80-90% science, 10-20% work, faith, will.
I do not need to know what sacroplasmic microfillament failure means to get big and lean nor do I need to know the exact rep on a specific exercise that will induce the most cellular damage.
I'll leave that to the dip dunks in lab coats who like it.
I'd rather do and be and let others figure out how it happened.
I know how it happened.
I made it happen.
Does my point of view un-perplex anything brother?
-and thank-you.

Strong work with the one armed pulldowns and the close grip pull-downs. 135 curls and hammer preachers are heavy duty as well
What is the problem with your shoulder? RC or labral tear? I'm surprised that you can do such heavy HS chest dips and 70lb incline flyes without aggravating the shoulder. Curls, flyes and dips don't upset the shoulders at all?
It's the big issue I've had since my RC and LHB ruptures and shoulder repairs --- I just can't press so I focus on pull-downs and pull-ups, but it's damn hard building up the chest without being able to bench.
Those pics
Your arms look plenty big enough there --- about the size of your head. Big forearms as well!"Better to wear out than rust out!"

I had a bit of catching up to do in here
Has the ham fixed itself or still giving you reminders? Lots of heavy and high volume work on the lying ham curls. You work harder with these than the extensions. Quads seem to handle a lot more weight than the hams, so I found it interesting(I do sitting ham curls).
You look kinda lost in that shirt, thank goodness the breavin' holes are big enough to find should you get into any difficulty
Arms are looking decent! keep pumping away at teh small body parts
Fittofat noted your arms are as big as your head. I take it the photo was not tampered with.. Did you measure the size of your head before you began bodybuilding? I ask because I heard that if you make your body bigger your head had to get smaller. So is there a point in which you should cease your muscle development as soon as you start noticing the warning signs of severe head reduction, such as-
*Having trouble following the plot on "Dukes of Hazzard"
*Believing Kate Perry gives you tremendous power.
*Putting cat pictures up in your bodybuilding journal.
If you meet any of these criteria, you probably shouldn't do any bodybuilding at all. Of course, if you already meet any of these criteria, you're probably still trying to figure out how I put those snowflakes before each of the above points.
Something to think about..

and
its perhaps the only thing I "beat" you on and i'm intent on at least keeping this part.
Thanks!
You kept them too?
What's the S.O have to say about them?
Thanks.
Really?
I never thought so. I think I should hang around some weaker people then!
I don't know what's wrong with my shoulder, been screwed up for years...not RC as I can do other things that those with RC probs can't.
The heavier I go, the more it aggravates it.
How about DB pullovers for you, do those hurt? The only thing I can suggest is to experiment with a variety of exercises and find one that doesn't hurt (hopefully) and stick with that one.
Thank-you.
My ham is good.
That day was meant for pre-exhausting warm ups before I was to do a lot of squatting and leg pressig. I focussed on hams as out of quads and hams my hams need more work than my quads.
I have not ever measured my noggin' but I can assure you my ego has gotten much bigger since bodybuilding.
Crazy or not, it is now clear to me I will never stop bodybuilding-and that includes competing.
Besides, one has to be a little nutters to do this in the 1st place.

LOOK!

You're not selling the concept of marriage to me very well bro.

TBH
I was in so much pain I functioned on tylenol and synephrine.
Like a sawed off 12 gauge taken right to my spine.
It could be the DOMS, the arthritis, the slipped disc, the cold and snow...or it could have been all of them.
I suspect the latter was the case.
I could barely walk to get food, nonetheless train.
Wisdom won.
I stayed home and immersed myself in my online tank game.

Brian, your dogged training through and with back injury has reminded me of this:
Despite determined German attacks, however, the perimeter held. The German commander, Lt. Gen. Heinrich Freiherr von Lüttwitz,[87] requested Bastogne's surrender.[88] When Brig. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe, acting commander of the 101st, was told of the Nazi demand to surrender, in frustration he responded, "Nuts!" Wikipedia

It looks like you had some great lifting sessions = the perfect lead-up to Christmas!
Great job on the deadlifts --- hitting those 395 reps only a month after re-starting with the deads. You got 405 for New Year if you want it!

and now its time for 2013!
Merry Christmas Jim, Lisa, and family.
I agree.
I will be in T.O again, one of the best times of my life...and totally awestruck by T.O.
Shooting for 2013. Gotta get a car (my 1st one...EVER), and a new career. Hoping the new career and competing can mix.
Probably will PM you for car buying advices.
Thanks mang, you too!
Thank-you, hopefully you spoiled the heck out of your grandaughter!
Thank-you very much.
Its like this for me; I want my squat back.
To do that my lower back must be able to handle the loads my stronger legs can.
and besides deadlifting, GM's have been a tried and true strength/muscle builder for me.
all this should yeild profit when I get back to squatting and not pulling anything.
or...my back might be permanently screwed and I will never squat like I used to again.
but in the mean time;
I gotta try.
Thank-you for your support.

My education in psychology and practicing it my mind.
My work with troubled kids and my belief in a Supreme Power my soul.

So I try to work on everything...and hope I'm doing it right.
Thank-you Steve.
