Stay away from any neck exercise you end up getting an unwanted injury, stick to basic deads, bench and squat!

Neck straps like another person posted. Shrugs help as well.

This is correct. Nobody has ever gotten injured with deads, bench and squat... stick to those!
Get a neck harness (unless you are fortunate to have access to a 4-way device, way easier to use than to put a towel and plates on your forehead like a crazy momo) and treat it like anything else, learn the proper movement and then progressively go heavier and make it a regular part of your routine. People deadlift 500lbs, putting their spine at huge risk, yet are afraid to do neck work with more than a 10lb plate, makes no sense to me.

I occasionally train neck to prevent injuries in rugby (Aussie version of grid iron) and whip lash from punches or cars.
The idea is keep it light and go 15-20 reps without too much trouble.
Grab 2-10kg (start lower) and lie back down on a bench with your head+neck sticking off the bench (enough to bend you head down 90 degrees - like you are looking upside down).
Hold the weight on your head and slowly move your head down, and then up - so your face parallel the floor. Do this lying chest down as well. 2-3 sets of each. Lighter is better.
Warning: You will look like an absolute tool if you do this in a public gym but screw the h8ers.
