    Homemade ice cream

Found an ice cream maker still in the packaging in the basement that my parents got as a wedding gift almost 30 years ago and fired it up and it worked! First batch was a chocolate-mocha base (used instant espresso powder) and then cut up some chunks of dark chocolate and mixed it in. Turned out way better than I expected, very creamy flavorful. If anyone has had edy's French silk, it almost replicated that exactly. Personally I loved it. Gonna be making a bunch more so want to give them all names. This one is either goin to be "First Time Chocolate Java Jitters" or "Choco-Mocha Fever"

    NSFW PICTURE BELOW...

Behold the greatness. I went to the local scoop shop and got the four Oatmeal Cookie Chunk's and a hand-packed pint of Candy Bar Pie. And, the 7/11 I stopped at to get ice just so happened to have Nutty Caramel Swirl, which I had been searching around for. Pure luck on that one. I'd call this a very successful trip

    Ben and jerrys Baked Alaska

The description states vanilla ice cream with marshmallowy swirls and white chocolate shaped polar bears. Obviously this is a pretty simple pint in comparison to something like "everything but the..." Or "chocolate peppermint crunch" but we have seen with flavours like "peanut-butter cup" and the classic "chocolate chip cookie dough" pull off simple one base, one mix-in flavours!

    [IMG]http://i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u645/BjjLeanBulk/73C465D2-913D-4C1C-BD25-CD431BB7AE2D-1352-0000026C74C58BE1_zps0d6720a2.jpg[IMG]

Upon opening the pint I was greeted with the refreshing off white colouring of Ben and jerrys vanilla base. There is a hint of the marshmallow swirl, but it is hard to see as the colour coincides with the base. Everyone is familiar with Ben and jerrys vanilla, it features in many of there ice creams and in my opinion never disappoints! It's creamy and has a good sweet vanilla flavour, but not to overpowering!

    [IMG]http://i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u645/BjjLeanBulk/ABBDF3F7-D206-4BEE-A427-3AC8BE3411E8-1352-0000026C7C858502_zpse2029169.jpg[IMG]

Next came the white chocolate polar bears. These are similar to the fish in phish food, but superior to my tastebuds, as I'm a large fan of white chocolate! The polar bears are plentiful throughout the pint and are not too hard although buried in frozen ice cream. They melt on the mouth and add a smooth creamy note that complements the base very well.

    [URL=http://s1326.photobucket.com/user/BjjLeanBulk/media/BA5E0871-1554-4EEE-8033-3396B4469E11-1352-0000026C824A5C1F_zps87a54f63.jpg.html][URL]

Last is the marshmallow swirl. This was the best picture I could get of the swirl itself. It often blended into the base, making it hard to distinguish. However, when discovered in large quantity like this, it was a nice gooey and sweet addition to the pint!

To conclude, this flavour is very sweet. All the components run across the same line of flavour, being sweet and creamy, so someone who likes a bit of savoury in their ice cream may not find this pint all that appealing. That being said, its not a bad pint. I find it a lot more satisfying than phish food, which is often overpowered by the strong chocolate base. In its simplest form, baked Alaska is the opposite of phish food, chocolate swapped for vanilla base, chocolate phish for white chocolate polar bears, both with the marshmallow swirl. (However, the swirl is much more prevalent in baked Alaska)

If you want to try something different and sweet, then give it a whirl. But I would generally prefer something with a denser mix-in.

    Where found: Tesco (UK)

Overall grade: C+ (only gets a + because I rate phish food a C, and this is better than phish food)
Buy again: probably not, might get a scoop at the cinema if I'm craving something sweet.

Ps: NOICC Baked Alaska kicks the sheet out of B&J'S!
If you think phish food is a C, then baked alaska must be fantastic

I'm pretty sure the American phish food is better than the UK's, because whenever I see pictures, the marshmallow and caramel swirls are massive and abundant, but in the UK they are tiny and hard to find even I'm a chocolate base!

That's horrible. Those swirls are key to it being one of my favorite B&J flavors.

Yeah, UK Phish Food is pretty poor. The froyo is actually better than the ice cream, which is weird.

I forgot to add in my post (I was overwhelmed by the ice cream) I mentioned to the lady working the scoop shop that I was sad they stopped making OCC. She said that she's heard conflicting reports. She heard it was being discontinued, but then she said she heard recently that it wasn't. She also said they just got a pretty big shipment of it in.

I'm not getting my hopes up since the official ******** announced it was being discontinued, but maybe there is a small chance that they're thinking twice about it? Who knows.

^^^^^ I asked in the other thread, but I think this thread is more appropriate.

I see that it's a limited edition flavor.

    Where did you buy it?

It's a limited edition that's only out around the holidays so most stores would be out of it by now. Keep an eye out for it during the winter because it's worth the wait.

No problem, I think they say it's supposed to be around from October until January or something among those lines. I can't exactly remember what their website said when it was on there though.

I want to thank you crazy fools for reminding me what you can eat when you decide to fit it into your macros: today was my father's bday and he's lost 45+ lbs since late last summer, so I decided to treat him with some B&J's. Went to walmart and discovered they had a rather poverty selection, but still, enough for someone whose not in the ice cream game yet.. he grabbed Karamel Sutra and I took up Phish Food. Amazing. First time I've had ice cream since Cold Stone back in October!

Anyways, last week I noticed my local Krogers stocks a lot of the 'rarer' flavors, so once I get some more testing under my belt I'll start hitting this thread up at least once a week with my noob opinions.

Btw, in absence of ice cream I had been making my own with yogurt, and the biggest factor I've found to giving yogurt the proper texture is freezing it over night, then letting it thaw before you mix in whatever you please.. gives it a real soft-serve feel.

Recipe is whatever you'd like. I personally use, and not necessarily all at one time, a combination of: PB2 or PB when fat is needed, whatever frozen fruits I have a around(blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pineapple, bananas, peaches.. the list is endless), roasted almonds(always roast them yourself), cinnamon in nearly every batch, whey (Giant Sports Vanilla I've found works the best for a really solid base), Cocoa powder/squares. etc etc. This was my cutting ice cream so the ingredients were rather low-cal.

Of course will never match the sweetness of real ice cream, but if you're feeling froggy you could add sugar/honey, artificial sweeteners for low-cal versions. I can also recommend coconut oil. The right amount won't make it taste coconutty but will give it that sweet, creamy velvet-like feel that yogurt lacks. Really just experiment, whatever you like, toss it.

So you freeze yogurt overnight, let it thaw a bit, and then mix in the other stuff?

I have some nonfat greek yogurt (have you tried it with nonfat greek yogurt?) that I want to try this with. I also have coconut oil and dark chocolate... and frozen cranberries... and PB2.

Might try PB2 and chocolate tomorrow.
