I used to like Breyer's in high school, then I tried B&J and have never looked backed. It's like trying to drink skim milk after only drinking whole milk for awhile, not satisfying at all.
The bases of both ice creams were really good, I just didn't like the mix-ins. I see what you did there hah, but it's in their ground up form which is so much better and satisfying.
I never said it was bad, just that I am not a fan of it. I do prefer mix-ins, and my favorite ice creams are B&J PB Cup and CB, plus Talenti's SSC. I think that the base in B&J is just as good as Jenni's, but I guess that's personal opinion. I do agree that if the brand released a PB flavor it would rock, I would definitely buy it.
It's your money, do what you want with it. If you don't like nuts in your ice cream stay away from it.

Don't set your expectations too high or it'll definitely be a letdown (especially if you're not that crazy about nuts in your ice cream). Jeni's just has a knack for packing a ton of complexity into their base ice creams, which I really enjoy. My rankings are based on my enjoyment of the flavors, but that's just my own take so people with different personal tastes may not share the same opinions.

It's tough to rank one against another if their properties and flavors differ. For instance Coffee Vs Caramel. Some people just will enjoy one versus the other. If it's in the above 8 ranking, it's probably pretty good. Looking at his list, I pretty much agree with the 8's, with the exception of Cannoli.

Reviewing ice cream isn't like reviewing movies or music, since there are very few downright "bad" ice creams. Sure, some are better than others, but of all the flavors I've ever had there's maybe only one or two where the experience of NOT eating it would have been better than the experience of eating it.

Recently I've really started to reconsider my ranking system. It's true their aren't many truly terrible flavors out there, hence why the majority of my scores are from 7.5/10 and above. When things share the same score it's most likely because I got the same amount of enjoyment out of both. Sometimes one flavor isn't clearly better than another in my personal opinion.
I've thought about moving to a simple A-F ranking (maybe even using + and - like Rodzilla) and lose the overall rankings portion of the site all together. Displaying the ordered list really seems to upset some people when they don't share the same opinion.
Any suggestions on what would be the best way to redo the rankings? I'm open minded on the topic as its clear I'm going to need to make a change soon.Last edited by Chadillac2000; 03-28-2013 at 06:55 AM.

Well that's the thing...it's your opinion. Changing to an A-F is just displaying your opinion in another way and readers are never going to 100% agree. What I do think may be valuable is to break out the ratings in certain defined categories - Texture, Taste, Look, etc. Score each category and come up with an average. Possibly a 1-5 or something. Again, it's just another way to share your opinion and of course, it's just my opinion on something so subjective .
On a side note, what I do think would be cool is if you did some kind of picture scale, maybe by brand of where those ice creams fall. Say B&J, you have your scale of 1-10 and along it you have pictures of the pints you have tried and where they fall.
Sorry to list out all of this stuff. I always think about marketing and displaying information to consumers and how it may be best consumed.

The overall ranking section is my favorite part of your site. I provides a quick and easy way to compare flavors and read reviews that are of interest. If you were to switch to a system where there would be more ties, like A-F, this would become even more important as there would be several ties. I'm sure people would still want to know which As you liked more, even if their taste buds disagreed.
However, I do agree that you should change your scoring system. If you were to choose the letter system, you would have 15 possible scores, including pluses and minuses. I remember reading a behavioral economist claim that humans are able to use a 1-7 ranking system more efficiently than the more commonly used 1-10. I would advocate switching to a 1-7 system, making sure you use the entire range (try to make sure the number of 1s and 2s you give are around the number of 6s and 7s), and get rid of the decimals. Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

I like the A-F rating system. It's simple and easy to understand. I also don't feel I need multiple paragraphs to summarize my feelings either. I'm a minimalist!
A - Awesome, can't miss.
B - Above average, might not be for everybody.
C - Meh. Pedestrian.
D - Bleh. Only seek it out if you're a fan of the flavor/theme.
F - Do not want."Nutrition for powerlifting: If you are serious about it, you will eat f*cking everything and get strong as $hit." - HamburgerTrain

I'm leaning towards the A-F with possibly category awards at the end of a certain time period. Maybe even an ice cream of the month at the end of each month as well.
But as others have said, it's still only my opinion.Check out my Ice Cream Review Blog: www.theicecreaminformant.com (Twitter: @CreamInformant)

I almost exclusively always use the overall rankings part of your site. It's a great way for me to see what the better ice creams are and what to stay away from. If I happen to disagree with your rankings, I like to read why you liked/disliked something. In the end I know it's all your opinion but I do value it in helping me make my choices.

Did you try it yet, Erick?
Cafe au lait & beignets was everything Chad promised and then some.
To date my favorite coffee bases are Jeni's Black Coffee and Steve's Cold-Brew Cinnamon Coffee. The CAL&B base is excellent, though I still tip my hat to the bases of Jeni's and Steve's in this regard. However dat dere vanilla butter cream frosting swirl is literally a game changer. To swirl that frosting with the coffee base is a masterstroke. I am serious, the level of HNNNG is insane. And that is without the pockets of beignets every now and then giving another dimension for my taste buds to jizz about.
I don't have a strict numbered list of my favorites, but I have what I would consider my "top five off the top of my head" and this is immediately in it.

I expect it will be decent. I've only ever tried Pirate's Booty and liked that, but Erick isn't a fan of the brand as you can see.
Quick bonus nugget of useless info: B&J's mix ins are so large and prevalent because Ben Cohen has next to no ability to smell and taste. The large mix-ins were the best way he could get any flavor during test batches.
Dammit, Erick. I saw the pics and thought they were freezer finds before reading the text.
I've said before that when it comes to cream and sugar it's hard to mess up. That said, I'd like you to keep and maintain your ranking system with the numbers as it is a source I use fairly often. By all means introduce a new and additional system. In fact, you could introduce multiple systems, either by breaking flavors up based on their base flavor e.g. a chocolate category, a caramel category etc. Alternatively, rank multiple facets about a product. So you would have a 1-10 rating of a product's mix-ins, 1-10 on the base, 1-10 on the texture/consistency, 1-10 on overall flavor experience. Could also add pros and cons, like price, servings per container, calories/fat etc.www.GetDS.com
