    fwark!, I get nervous speaking in class. Thought I was over this. halp! (1.6k)

    So I learned today that we are gonna be doing a presentation for my english class in the upcoming weeks. Thankfully its a group presentation, so I wont be up there alone. Anyways, in my last english calss during the summer, I had to do these but more often every other week(did about 5-6 total) and I got okay at it, not to nervous. So when I found out we have one I was like alright whatever. Well, she handed out an article and we took turns reading at our desks right after this was discussed. When it was my turn, I started getting really nervous. I could feel my face getting red and that made me even more nervous. I read my part awkwardly with my voice cracking quite a bit till I was done. What the phucking **** man.

    Brahs, how can I get over this anxiety. Srsly.. I thought I was fine after having to do it and now I find I didnt get any better at all. I mean, I was nervous sitting at my desk with no one even looking at me, just me speaking. I dont even wanna think about standing up front now. I dont even...

    Is there some medicine or something I could take to calm me down? Or recommend ways on to get better other than just practicing. I feel like if my heart would stop beating so hard, I would do better. I dont mind speaking in front of class, its when I get nervous my voice starts to crack and then I feel uber embarrased.

    Anyways, I got to head off to another class now. Ill check back here in two hours.

    Public speaking is feared more than death. This interesting fact is brought to you by me hearing it somewhere.

    Why are you nervous? Not a psychiatrist here, but if you can figure out the aspect that makes you nervous then perhaps it will be easier to overcome. I use to be nervous because I gave a crap what people thought of my presentation because I feared I might sound ignorant or dumb. Now that I feel great about my knowledge on the subjects I have had to speak about I don't feel nervous when I'm up there talking about it/them.

    Even good presenters are usually nervous man. You probably suffer from the spotlight effect which makes you believe people are paying more attention to you than they are. When you feel yourself getting nervous, don't focus on the thought that people notice it. Chances are they don't even if it looks like they do. Deep breaths will also probably help you calm down. When you're actually doing you're actually doing your speech, it might help to slow down. Trying to speed through the speech because you realize your nervous will make you stumble over words and stuff. If you need to, take a few seconds to collect your thoughts/recompose yourself. It might feel like a long gap inbetween words to you, but it isn't to the audience.

    Most people feel embarrassed about presenting, I'm fairly lucky to have natural confidence, but even still I get some jitters when things are about to start.

    A few tips:
    1.Positive self talk. Use phrases and sayings that will make you fell comfortable, they're all personal so it varies what can be used. For me I say things like "I'm God" "They will mire my eloquence brah" "I have the power"

    2.Rehearse what you're saying. Being well prepared can make the difference between fumbling along the presentation and sailing through it with ease. Know your points.

    3.Breathing. As simple as this sounds, when you get nervous your heart rate elevates and your breathing becomes very quick and short. Take deep long breathes beforehand and during your presentation. Also have water on hand in case your throat gets sore.

    4.When practicing, do it in front of friends. Once you get comfortable in front of an audience (even a small and friendly one), it's very easy to translate to classroom work. It's like working out, once you start getting used to weight training your body adapts to the stress, same thing mentally with presentations.

    5.Meditate, this is something that I would suggest for anyone looking for inner peace and confidence. 10-15 mins a day 4-5x a week is plenty.

    6.Read, that way you'll have an expansive vocabulary to call upon when choosing which dialect you want to utter. You don't need to flaunt it constantly, but throwing out a "You enamored sibling" certainly doesn't hurt.

    When youre sitting in the crowd listening to one of your classmates give a presentation, do you really care THAT much about what theyre saying? Probably not, and the truth is they dont care that much about your presentation either. So theres no need to get super nervous over it.

    Thank you to those who actually had adivce. Ill check out proponol to see what it is all about.

    I think part of the problem is I psyche myself out. The build up to doing is the worst. I have tried going first but it doesnt really help because if I tell myself I am gonna go first, I am just as nervous if I decided to wait a bit to do mine. I start to breathe heavy and I can feel my chest pounding really hard. I get stressed and then stumble on words. It sucks man. We have read before in class and I didnt get nervous those time. And I think the reason was because it was spontaneous. Like, she would call on random people. If she called me, I read and I was fine. This time though, she went down row by row, so I was getting nervous because I knew my turn was coming up. Its so stupid but totally debilitating.
