I am looking into picking up an atlas stone mold for my strongman training and was wondering if there is a good average or standard size for training. I can only afford one mold (teacher) but I know I can add weight to it easily. The place I was going to buy some atlas stones from never have them in stock.

18" is a solid size and you can get upwards to 280 lbs with inserts. Anything larger will be unwieldy without a lot of practice and tack, but the weight will be much heavier at a cheaper cost. How much experience do you have with stones and what weight do you feel comfortable starting with?

Agree with 18". You can go from 200-280 lbs pretty easily.

i would just get the 20'' one...
you can make pretty heavy stones with that mold and it isn't that hard to grip... (and i have pretty short arms)
the molds are really expensive, so you might as well get one that you'll be able to use for a long time...best raw lifts (in competition):
squat 350 (772 lbs) - belt and wraps
bench 210 kg (462 lbs)
deadlift 320 kg (705 lbs) - belt

My experience with stones is little which is why I wanted a more basic size that I can increase in weight a few times before having get another mold. As for weight starting around the 200lb mark since I have lifted more at my old summer job with less wieldy items. And slaterhardware is exactly the size I was looking at.
I also want one of their logs too but that is way out of my price range.....

Well then the 18" would be an acceptable starting size, but keep in mind that technique is going to be far different from any lift you've ever performed. It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up the 18" mold to build a few stones and then hunt down somebody with a 16" mold to kick out a 175ish learner stone.

PM me if you'd like some info on a strongman crew that trains not too far from where you live.

Did not see that craigslist add when I was going through craigslist. But I figure with my own stone mold making more then one stone would be cheaper on my wallet. I am picking up a roughly 950lb tire from Raleigh tomorrow though.
And thanks all for the information. I will probably start with the 18" and go from there. If I need to lighten it up then so be it and I will use inserts to lighten it up.

A 16 with just concrete makes a roughly 175 stone. An 18 with no insert makes a 240. A 20 makes 340. You can get foam balls at craft stores to use as lighteners for your stones. I still havent found a more cost effective approach than slaters for heavy inserts.
