IMO dumbbell squats are not as effective as barbell squats. You are limited in how much you can lift not because of leg strength but due to the awkwardness of the exercise. Perhaps use a hack squat or leg press if your gym has one of those machines.

Things you can do without a squat rack:

1)hip belt squats, your gym will likely have a weight lifting belt and chain and possibly some platforms to elevate yourself on if you need it

2)barbell hack squats, all you need is a loaded barbell to do this, maybe something to cushion the backs of your ankles

3)dumbbell/barbell lunges, you can push press the barbell onto your shoulders or really work your grip with dumbbells

4)deadlifts, I find Sumo deads hit my hamstrings really well

Surely the stuff I just suggested isn't that bad! lol

Seriously, though, db squats are pretty bad when your grip starts giving out before you can complete a set.

If you really want to do db squats, I suggest giving db front squats a go, grip isn't such a factor, then.

All the other stuff I mentioned, though, would honestly be better.

You do understand that you'll db front squat much less than you bb front squat, right?

Still, not as effective as the other stuff I mentioned, though it could be used as a good finishing move.
