aside from using physical means like ammonia/smelling salts or having someone hit you, what runs through your mind to prepare for a big lift?
what has worked best for you-- do u pretend ur family is being held at gunpoint? do u think about someone who betrayed you?

Boom, roasted!
I'm not sure anger is the best emotion to channel during a lift. I like to get hyped up before I lift, but it's more an attempt to clear my mind. Playing mind games about my family being held hostage might be a good strategy if I was Kiefer Sutherland and trying to get in character, but I'm not sure it would work well for a max squat.
Most top lifters who get really hyped up seem to be less angry and more in a euphoric state, e.g. Benedikt Magnusson. Then there are the ones who are cool as cucumbers: Malanichev, Posdeev, Belyaev. Maybe it's a Russian thing.637/390tng/615 - belt/wraps, best gym lifts.

I have had the worst year of my life, but for the few seconds a heavy lift takes - theres nothing. All my pain; struggle, gone. Pre lift, I'm channeling all of my emotions. In that moment, I know I can crush anything - the pain - the weight.. Thats how i gear up for a lift. If I try to get too angry or too aggressive i miss lift cause I'm thinking too much.. for me its a delicate balance..

I like to sit calmly while I punch myself in the testicles for 5 minutes straight, as hard as I can. This gets me so fired up when it comes time to stop punching myself in the testicles.

^^this
its just part of life, whatever is happening that day is happening in my training also
sometimes i guttural and do a front bodybuilder pose AFTER a big lift because my juices are flowing
but beforehand its all business
my motivation mostly comes from the harsh realization of being weak as *uck and the fear of not achieving my goals
or translated to a warmer context: the desire to succeedThe muscles i value most are the ones directly surrounding the spine, the hips, the scapula, the femur and the tibia... in that order.
Basically the whole body minus chest and biceps... pretty much the opposite of what your local gym looks like on a typical Monday.

Whatever you do try to keep your head up so you can keep your eyes on the prize. It's a marathon not a sprint. Dance to the beat of your own drum. So I guess my advice at the end of the day is to stare at the weight angrilly, work yourself into a sustainable rage for a prolonged period, and do it in your own way. I hope this helps. Good luck in life and lifting.

I think of the crews and how everyday all I do is come to this damn site. I think of all the times that I've been rejected. I think of all of the times ive pussied out whenever a girl is around, or how scared i am to make eye contact with girls. I think of how lifting is my only hope to live a normal life, and i just go crazy after that...inb4 stats
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Im always slightly annoyed/angry. When I lift I just let it out. I get really intense in the gym, stomping before a squat, hitting bench before bench etc. Not always but sometimes. I also dont take pre workout, I just get worked up to lift.

I'm a really calm lifter. I'm also Russian. Maybe breathinglife is right. I do occasionally psyche myself up for Deadlifts. When I'm doing speed work, it's fun to get a little worked up because then the weight feels like it moves faster and I just get into a good mood.

It's as breathinglife said it's a state of euphoria where I visualize it's me and the bar and nothing else matters in the moment but moving it. So with saying that it's trance that gets me most pumped up.Discretion of speech is more than eloquence, and to speak agreeably to him with whom we deal is more than to speak in good words, or in good order.
