    Identity of this Power Rack?

I found this on Craigslist and the guy wasn't sure what the brand was of it. Kind of looks like a Body Craft style, but comparing pictures it doesn't seem to match up.

    Parabody 843

If you decide to buy it, ask the seller if he has the dip handles that originally came with it. They're pretty hard to find by themselves.

Wow, that was fast. Thanks! What would be a good deal on it? He's selling the bench as well. Not sure what would be a good deal on the combo.

If you punch "parabody 843" into Google, the 5th pic to come up is my white 843. Once you own one, they're pretty easy to pick out.

It depends on how bad you need/want a rack, what else comes with it, and how likely you are to find something comparable on CL in a reasonable time. I paid $300 for mine, with a 7' oly bar, about 200lbs of plates, and a plate tree...and it was listed for several weeks before I picked it up.

It's a great rack, very solid, but they don't seem to have the same mass appeal (or perhaps brand recognition) of Powertec, Body Solid, etc.

I think it's more of a brand recognition thing. OP, Parabody made great stuff. I didn't look to see what the deal was that they were offering, but it is good equipment.

What is the seller asking for it? Is it just the rack and the bench, or is he offering weights/other stuff as well?

He's asking $800 for it. It includes the rack, bench, and standard 300lb Olympic set. I was looking around and similar collections are going for around $400-500 and most of those cages have the lat attachment.

It looks like the bench is Parabody too? I'm needing a rack and bench. I was looking into buying a Body Solid rack for $400 new from Fitness Outlet, but if I can get a bundle deal on Craigslist I'd prefer that and not have to deal with the bench and the issues with the Body Solid cage that arises from rear floor bar not being recessed from the rack. I'm not sure about the pull-pins though and their safety in comparison to the saber type. Are they pretty much equally safe?

    Similar deals I've found:

As much as I like my rack, I wouldn't drop $800 on that setup. As you already pointed out, you can get a brand new Body Solid GPR378 for ~$400, a matching Body Solid bench (GFI21) that'll work with that rack for $280 (maybe less if you shop around), and still have $120 toward a used 300lb oly set on CL.

I'd say $500-550 for the rack, bench, and 300lb oly set...maybe $600 if you really like it and your CL is fairly slow. You should have plenty of time to ponder it, since I doubt it's going anywhere at his current price.

That rack and bench are nice, but not worth $800. I'd say $450 is about as high as I would go. In my area (near Philly), the rack, bench, and weight set could be had for $300.

Did you find that deal on CL? If so, how long has the ad been up? He may think he is offering a decent deal if it is recent. If the ad has been up for a while, you might try to talk him down, although $800 to $300 or 400 is quite a difference. Maybe he just wants it out of his garage.....

Edit: maybe I'm off by a hair. $200 for the rack, $150 for the weights, $100 for the bench (generously) would really be more like $450.

Yeah, there is no way I would pay $800 for it especially when I am seeing the rack being sold alone for $200-$300 on threads here, sometimes even with weight sets. I asked him to measure it since I have 83.5" ceiling and he said it's 79.5" so it would fit. I told him I would think on it. I think I'll e-mail him those postings so he sees what it is going for and then offer $450 for everything, but I'd probably be willing to go up to $500. Is that a Parabody bench? Seems like that is the bench that is in all of the Parabody rack postings. Decent bench?

It is indeed a Parabody bench, although I don't recall specifics about it. If you look at the rear support, that is what I meant in the other thread about them being "curved"--I actually was thinking they were more curved than angled! D'Oh!

I think your plan to offer $450 and be willing to buy at $500 is probably a good one. You would be getting something very close in quality to the Body Solid rack you were looking to buy anyway. Make sure that there are no rips in the pads, no major rust, and be sure to ask about the dip handles!

By the way, there is nothing wrong with the pop pin safeties. They'll hold up just fine!

    Good luck!

Thanks. From what I can tell it looks to be pretty clean, but I would be sure to give it a good check to make sure everything is in good order. I asked him about the dip handles, but no dice.

Anyone know the weight capacity and gauge of steel used in the Parabody? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Doesn't matter too much, but I am curious how it compares to the Body Solid.

I don't know for sure, but I believe it will hold at least as much as the Body Solid. Parabody and Body Solid are pretty comparable.

I've always remembered parabody as being slightly more heavy duty then body solid when compared like for like, but I haven't seen one for years so I could be wrong. Parabody made some nice stuff for the price.

I've heard that as well about Parabody. I don't know that I have ever seen/used similar items by both makers to really compare the two, although I guess that isn't truly necessary.

That's my problem as well. I have a BS bench and lat machine, and a Parabody rack and calf machine, and I'd say their quality is comparable based on my equipment...but I can't compare the two brands rack/rack or bench/bench.

Anyone know the weight capacity and gauge of steel used in the Parabody? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Doesn't matter too much, but I am curious how it compares to the Body Solid.
    if it's a parabody 843 rack, they're rated for 1000 lbs.
Now OK for Sig line to be a novel

    Thanks.

Can anyone comment on the usefulness of being able to place the j-hooks on the outside of the power rack? You can on the Body Solid, but not on the Parabody, just wondering if that feature is particularly useful for anything and something I might miss? I was thinking I might miss it on being able to do standing overhead presses outside the rack, but not sure what else.

Mine has a set of bar hooks welded to the front of the spotter arms, but there's also a pair of bar hooks welded to the inside of the front uprights which limits how high you can raise the spotter arms.

You can see both in the link you posted.

I completely missed them in those pictures. I looked up a side picture of the rack and saw them clearly. Thanks for pointing that out.

That Parabody rack is a hair shorter than most, I believe. Parabody owners can correct me if I am wrong, but I think it is something like 79.5 inches tall. Having some sort of hooks on the front of the rack is handy for things like overhead presses, which you won't really be able to do inside the rack. That's my own opinion, anyway. I got around that with my Body Solid rack by putting 2x4's under the rack. That gives me just enough room to do presses inside the rack.

The rack is 79.5" which is great for me considering I have a 7' ceiling in my basement. I sent the offer, but no word yet. I have a feeling he's going to keep it up until someone coughs up a lot for it. He mentions he paid $1,200 originally for it all so he's asking $800, but that's way too much. He probably wasn't too happy with an offer almost half that, but things are worth what they are worth.

    You got that right!

It may take a little time, but something will come along. Nothing wrong with buying new, but I might hold out a while longer to see what pops up on CL, especially if you are willing to drive a ways. Most of the forum regulars can tell a story about how they drove a few hours each way to pick up something that they really wanted.

You have actually learned a lot in the past week or so about racks and benches. You can take that knowledge and use it to your advantage in situations just like this one.

Hell, I wish my Suburban was worth 2/3 of what I paid for it, but that's not how depreciation works.

I actually have some time now. I was lifting three times a week following Strong Lifts and getting to the point where I wanted the safety of a cage for my lifts, but I had a slight hand accident. While cleaning my spin bike chain the cloth I was using got pulled into the spokes and with it my hand. Cut about 1/3 the way through my ring finger and broke it so my routine is done for at least a month. At least this way I can search for cheap deals in the meantime. haha
