Puerto Rico The 51st State?
Wow, I hadn't even picked up on this. Puerto Rico voted in a referendum (non-binding) for statehood. 54% of voters approved. I believe it would require a vote by Congress to officially 'link' La Isla del Encanto as the latest state added to the Union. This is interesting. I hadn't seen or heard anything mentioned about just such a referendum taking place. I guess there were other more pressing things on the agenda! Ha!

In the past, Puerto Rico hasn't really pushed for statehood. The POTUS stated if a "majority" voted for statehood that they would seriously consider it. But you are correct, the ball is in the court of the US Congress.

LOL Little by little, in bits and spurts, more news is making its' way onto the net. It's not quite that 'cut and dried' of a thing evidently. Ha! A 'sticky-wicket.' I guess after yesterday, last night, this morning, news outlets are turning their attention to things a bit further from field. My goodness! There are other things going on in the world than just a Presidential Election!

The PR vote was a bit complex. In part 1, 54% voted against the status quo (Commonwealth). Then in part 2, everyone (even those voted for the status quo) could vote for an alternative. Of those who voted in part 2, 61% (800,000 votes) chose statehood, 33% chose sovereign free association (I think this the same thing that Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands have, which is mostly independent), and 5.5% chose independence. But 500,000 people left that ballot blank. So less than half actually voted for statehood - so I don't think it's going anywhere.
I would support statehood if a substantial majority want it - but I think it needs to be at least 75% in favor. But they should be aware that statehood will inevitably erode Puerto Rico's Spanish identity. You can see what happened to Hawai'i since statehood. Plus they'll lose their separate Olympic team and Miss Universe entry (which they have done quite well at).

It doesn't look that bad with 51. If everyone's attached to the 50 state version, just combine a couple states we already have so the number stays the same. I like the sound of a unified Dakota. No more North and South.

Looking at that, you're right, it actually doesn't look that bad. Don't know how the folks in the Dakotas would feel about combining as one. They'll probably say the Carolinas would look better together. Maybe the rest of the country can vote on whether we combine the Dakotas, Carolinas or the Virginias. Either that or we just let Texas secede to get back to 50.

How's about we get rid of Kalifornia since it's full of weirdo's, wackjobs and liberals? Put up a giant border fence and let Mexico have it.

I'm moving to Texas.
From what I here they're seceding
And they can add Puerto Rico and not have to change the flag

You mean let California have Mexico? California's economy is bigger than all of Mexico's combined.

If Texas secedes (in another OV35 misc thread...), PR is in, the flag remains as is.

With our 10 provinces and 3 territories that would be 52-64.

Can we just drop California instead, that'll leave us at an even 50.

That would solve the budget problems here overnight. California pays out much more in federal taxes than they take in through government spending. The poorer states would be a lot poorer without the generous contributions from California taxpayers.
I read several years ago about a movement to split California into two states, North and South. That was before I moved here. I wonder what ever happened with that.

no care
West Virginia is an unconstitutional State anyway, so there's already an extra star up for grabs.
