There is always someone less fortunate, with real hunger, with real adversity, who made something of themselves. What is your excuse?

I don't get how Moore speaking the truth somehow downplays the seriousness of the situation. Canada has strict gun laws and I see and hear about retarted stuff that the general public doesn't have the slightest clue about. It's not gun laws that stop criminals from having guns. It's the way guns are viewed as a whole in the country that makes them readily available or not, and it's the overall culture of the country that drives people to do this stuff. You can make the most strict gun laws imaginable, but if someone wants a gun bad enough, they'll get it.
That aside, these incidents make be sick to my stomach and makes me absolutely RAGE that police officers in Canada can't carry off duty. I could be in the mall or school or theatre that gets shot up and be absolutely helpless, instead of eliminating the threat.1175 @172

How many school shootings have you had in Canada the last decade?
Listen, I own 4x9mm pistols, 3x.45 acp pistols, 2 x .223 rifles, 4-5 shotguns, was an NRA member for many years, used to go to gun shows whenever I could. I like shooting, I WANT to believe that their availability isn't (part of, at least) the problem. I WANT to believe the mouth-breathers at the gun shows that the problem is not enough normal people carrying.
When this all dies down, I'd like to know what aspect of our culture in the US (vs. Canada) that makes us want to kill a bunch of little kids.

I'm sure the mass coverage of it making it known and making the shooters famous sure as hell doesn't help.

Of course availability isn't the only factor. But it is a huge factor. Nobody should have the right to bear arms, it isn't a right.

You'd change your mind if you ever had to shoot someone in self defense and were charged with murder because you weren't allowed to carry a weapon.
Or, as Ammex said, weren't allowed to neutralize a threat meaning less saved lives compared to if you could neutralize that threat legally.
IE. Some crazy starts shooting people in a movie theater and you have a concealed weapons permit.
compared to
Some crazy starts shooting people in a movie theater and you have nothing because it's illegal to carry.

look, i'm all for sane people being able to own guns and all that, and i won't contest that the text of the Constitution gives citizens the legal right to bear arms as it is currently interpreted by the courts, but what bothers me is how incredibly easy it is for someone to walk into walmart, a pawn shop, a gun show, whatever, and get a gun without any material questions being asked. i have a brother who suffers from mental illness including psychosis, bi-polar, manic episodes, and paranoia. i've seen him in the throes of psychosis, and i understand that his mental illness does not necessarily define who he is outside of his illness. but i've seen him literally go nuts at my parents, say chit like that i needed to die in order for the world to be safe, seen him cuffed and thrown in the back of a cop car and committed to a mental health facility, the whole nine yards. still, he is legally entitled to the right to purchase and use a firearm. that scares the chit out of me, knowing that he and people like that have unfettered access to guns, and knowing that people want to protect his right to own one. i've looked mental illness right in the eyes, and ignoring that it is a major factor in all of these shootings lately is just unimaginable to me. gun control is a federal issue (ffs, the main support for the right to own guns is the f'ing Constitution; if that doesn't make it a federal issue then idk what the federal government is there for in the first place) and should be strictly regulated by the federal government.
i've also dealt with a client who had a mental health history and was able to walk into a pawn shop, drop a couple hundred bucks on a glock, no questions asked, and went out and shot someone he didn't know in a high rise parking garage during lunch. how does that make any sense? do people really think the Constitution should protect people's ability to do that?Given enough time, any man may master the physical. Blending in a few opinions from both sides, I'd have to conclude that perhaps it isn't right for it to be an absolute right to own a gun no matter who you are because of situations like this.
But perhaps more of a privilege that anyone can have as long as they don't have mental instabilities, etc.
Sort of like having a drivers license.
But by all means I absolutely do not agree with guns being totally illegal to carry no matter what, and I think that's stupid.

what ammex said. someone with legitimate evidence to support self-defense would never be charged with murder, regardless of whether or not a gun is involved. they could still be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, but self-defense would negate a murder charge in every state.

He said "look, i'm all for sane people being able to own guns and all that,".
You just got finished saying the UK was a better place for having strict gun laws. And now you say you agree with earthshield? A person who says it's okay to have guns as long as you're sane?
You're contradicting yourself, and are basically a moron.

Also keep in mind - the guns are already in the country. The availability is already very high. It would take a long long long long time to change that, even if the laws changed.
