I'd argue that in medieval times, the Catholic Church could've probably been considered an empire as well. It controlled a lot of land, and had an extremely amount of power.
You say that the concept of an empire island through contest. Ok, what about the american-mexican war? Or even the United States civil war?

What about them?
Conquering one region does not equate to being an empire
The US civil war was between the North and South. Not over land, over political policies. The lands they seized from each other and took back and forth were already lands controlled by them.
The US-Mexican war does count as conquest. However like I said, it doesn't equate to an empire. Merely land seizure. if the US had expanded southward throughout central America and into South America then yes it could be argued as an empire.
But it didn'tIn 1995 I had $7 bucks in my pocket and knew two things: I'm broke as hell and one day I won't be - Dwayne Johnson (The Rock)

Perhaps you were right about the civil war, point conceded.
The United States didn't need more land, so it had no reason for further attack mexico. In the new era, especially after World War II, you could see the world dividing itself into two blocs. The capitalist, and the communist. That's how I view it anyway, two empires fighting for control of the planet. United States used the Marshall Plan in europe to control and influence countries. It also directly and indirectly affected politics in latin america, aiding military dictatorship and/or rebels to overthrow democratic governments. You could also say the war in Iraq was imperialistic. The United States had interest in invading Iraq, and it did.
And props to you for actually standing your ground and debating. Instead of just name calling.Only the fittest of the fittest shall survive.
