Best workouts for abs?
Just curious what everyone does as far as ab workouts. I see the guys with 6 packs and can never seem to get them ripped like that, the upper ones are visible but lower not as much. Once I start doing a new workout I can see some results but after a couple weeks the muscle burn during the workout starts to go away and I feel like I'm not doing as much. And I'm not one of those 100 pound kids that can do a couple crunches and be done with it either. I just want a nice set of abs (defined sides too), any suggestions?

Hi Steven,
Renegade dumbbell rows, kettle bell swings, front squats with barbell, hanging leg raises, ab roller, heavy undulated rope and dead lifts are great exercises for abs so make set of these exercises for desired results.

yes compound exercises help build a strong core but the key is resistance training. many people do hundreds of crunches...cool. now think about it. your abs are a muscle. would you work your biceps with a hundred curls? i sure hope not. use medicine balls on your situps and increase weight of mball as it gets easier. do hanging leg raises for lower abs, when those get easy, put a weight/strap a weight between your feet. just try this and tell me it if doesnt help* reps for life.
edit: if your bf isnt low enough then your not going to have abs regardless of what you do.

For abs it is a lot about dieting and high cardio. But for building muscle I would try and do weighted ab exercises. Ones that I am experimenting with are weighted crunches, weighted russian twists, or boat pose with a weight in your hands.

How low is low enough? Going off the diagram on this website I'm at about 14%.

do as many situps as you can work your way up to doing them like 2-5 minutes a day: and for you sides just bend to each side like your trying to to touch the side of your sneaker touch the side of your knee each side about 2 minutes and you'll also need to do cardio. run or jump rope 20 mins a day

I usually do weighted situps , leg raises , gorilla chin ups , dumbell side bends and half up twists. Gives me a nice burn.

You wont notice your abdominal muscles in my opinion until your about 9-10%. You will need to lower your BF before you see any difference in that region. As noted above all them exercises are perfect for trying to get great abs but if your BF is not low enough it's pretty pointless. Also when you do abdominal workouts don't forget your obliques as it's important to smash them just as much as your abs. Good luck.

Cardio is the best ab exercise. Period.
Negged to red on 11/6/2012 because I support Barack Obama.

Fork downs and plate pushes are the best ab exercise. You can do 12 hours of HIIT cardio a day and if you're eating too much you still won't get abs.
