This is probably no help, but just in case you are doubting that short guys can dunk, nate robinson is currently 5'9. Won the nba dunk contest. BUT, he said he first dunked when he was in the 8th grade. So he was probably around 5'3 at that time. But I highly doubt at that young of an age he did anything special to jump that high. He just naturally has hops.

To me it always seemed like some people just got natural hops, like Optimist said. You could do the usual weighted jumps, platform jumps, plyometrics and resistance training combined, but I have friends around 5'8''-5'10'' who never did any of that and had skinny ass legs and could get pretty close to dunking. A couple of them started practicing and eventually could dunk.
When I was around 19 I couldn't even reach the rim, I started doing all those exercises I mentioned and eventually could reach a few inches above it, but not enough to dunk.ωσяℓ∂ тяανєℓєя ȼяєω

I can touch the rim and am 5'9 and hope to be dunking by the time I'm 16
Touching the rim
Not sure on my vert but my jumping is really down to genetics, I have been lifting for around 4 months now and you can check my log out for my lifts
Would you count my jumping as a running vert or standing?Last edited by thenewguy23; 11-04-2012 at 01:52 AM.

I'm 6' tall and had dunked once in high school. At the time i was coming off 10 consistent months of sports including 2-3 monhts of soccer, 3 months of basketball and 2 months of voleyball. i also weighted probably around 175 maybe 180.
ever since high school i've put on weight (now around 218) and can just touch the rim (I'm 32), thats about it. would like to think that you can get back to that but someething tells me i'll never dunk again. I wonder how it would look like if i was able to come back down to 180.
There is always this one or two odd guys who seem to defy gravity better than others, had a friend who was just 1 inch taller, probably skinier than me and he had a good couple inches on the jump over me and could dunk with ease. legs are part of it but i think abs are also extremely important.

I mean I think when your under 6 foot it has to do a LOT with genetics and natural ability. When I was in 8th grade could only touch net but by end of high school I could easily hang on rim but have yet to dunk (havent really trained hard for it). That was just development of natural ability. If your under the age of 18 just give your body time to see what it can naturally achieve then worry bout weight training and plyos. Not saying they dont help but they may not be required.
To answer the OPs question a good starting point would be to squat 2x your body weight while not gaining to much weight. That alone has shown to add as much as 8 inches to a jump. If your still not quite there incorporate plyos to get around another 3-8 inches. Most of all flexibility and jump technique. Tight muscles wont help you fly and practicing jumping always helps.
