How old are you? Usually surgery isn't a good idea unless you are "older".
I had the same injury, doing deadlifts like a hero noob. I got a couple cortisone shots, which significantly reduce the back/leg sciatica. Problem is you feel better but you aren't healed, so you need to stay away from any lower back stressers at the gym (squats, deads, decline bench, overhead press) to prevent further disc degeneration FOR A LONG TIME.
Go to a physical therapist. They will more than likely show you how strengthen your core muscles, which will eventually help to alleviate stress on your lower back. With time, your back should start to feel better, allowing you to hit the weights hard again (at least in my case it did.)
Oh, yeah. Try not to get hooked on painkillers. That's a bitch.

I'm saying what the other guy said. Most people on here don't have actual back problems, more imbalances that cause pain but since you have real nerve damage be careful. Don't try to get crazy with anything but do focus on making sure the moments are perfect. I don't really like mentioning them for training advice but hodgetwins on YouTube both have the same sort of problem you have and have still gotten great results. Squats and dead lifts are probably gonna be out forever but not the biggest deal since you still have many other options to work the muscles that those hit. Post anymore info and the mri pics and maybe someone can give you a better opinion.

There are not just one PT in the world. Seek someone who has been in the field for some time, if you have the possibility get a specialist in the orthopedic or neuro field. Usually if one can't help you another can. Most physical complications can actually be solved with time and physical therapy. A herniated disc will heal, but it takes a LONG time, and the same you feel can most likeley be fixed by strengthening other parts of the body like other posters said.
If it gives me any legitimicy I'm a PT student myself.

Hey bro, I feel your pain. I haven't had a full workout in more than two months. I stopped completely a month ago as I did not want to make the problem worse. I'm due to have an MRI in the next week or so, but doctor thinks its a disk pinching one of my nerves severely. I've had severe sciatica for over a month now due to this problem. Listen to what the others are saying in regards to exercise. Drop it all together until you heal completely or seek the advice of someone who can show you how to lift properly without stressing the back. This whole ordeal has been psychologically more harmful than anything else to me, as like you said, you want to be able to get back to doing everything you used to do. Unfortunately, this sucker takes a WHILE to overcome. Be patient and stay mentally tough....you will get better.
