I've wanted to be a writer since I was putting down my first He-Man stories in crayon at age 4...

For most of my life I saw being a writer as the old cliche of the guy passionately generating eloquent prose, while having too much to drink.

Admittedly this was my view and my sloppy writing style in the early years. When I got into my early 30's and my advertising career started falling apart, I got serious about it and serious about learning about it.

Every step along the way has been an active lesson and skill development opportunity.

In the past I never had a problem with voice. Most writers toil on "Finding their voice" but that was actually my strong suit.

My weakness was organizing information in a way that connected with the user. Writing for a newspaper, where you're not allowed to use prose or your own active voice tightened up all of my skills. At the same time writing technical manuals, lifestyle guides and cookbooks taught me how to organize information.

Now the things that used to be my weaknesses are actually seen by my clients as my strength.

I finally have open contracts to publish my own works in my own voice and I'll know how to organize the information in a way that connects with my reader. At the same time my marketing background should help me position them effectively.

I've always been a cockeyed optimist, so I could be going all Retardo Montalbon... But from where I sit today, I can see all the pieces coming together for me.

If there is a restaurant supply store nearby, you should try them as well. Restaurant kitchens usually demand quality fillet knives, and supply stores will sometimes carry cheap, quality knives.

They aren't pretty... Just a sharp blade with a white plastic handle. Sometimes you can find them for $5 each. The Rapala knife cost me $9.99 back in 1999.

Berkley makes a nice electric fillet knife. Battery life is very good. Blades lasted a couple seasons before needing to be replaced. Of course all that is relative to how much use they will get.

The Golden Triangle in peak pheasant season is quite a thing to behold.

I love how you can walk into a grocery store and there are pallets of ammo on display in the produce section right next to the apples!

I guess I can do better than that.

I hope everyone is doing well, it's been a LONG time since I signed in.
Had a killer year last year hunting wise.

Shot my first elk ever with a bow and then two nice bucks, also with a bow, all on public land.

Now this year I am gearing up for another elk hunt, mule deer hunt, lots of whitetail hunting, and I drew a once in a life time Oryx tag for New Mexico.
To say I am not excited is an understatement.

I know this is a month old, but LOL @ anything that's not a Dexter knife. The Bubba Blades are pretty decent too but Dexter is the standard when it comes to fillet knives.

I am going all out this year!!!!
I know I saw the same thing every year, but this will be like no other.

My first and last hunt will be the most important crucial.
Elk season is my first hunt for the year and then oryx will wrap it up in February.

Elk tastes amazing, but Oryx is hands down the best meat I have ever put in my mouth..... (bring your finest puns for that one)

For those who don't know what an Oryx is.....

They are tough animals and should be an interesting hunt, but I am going for gold.

Then I have a mule deer hunt where my camp will be around 10k feet above sea level and more whitetail hunting than I can throw a stick at.

I may need to buy another freezer

Doesn't your TX deer season open soon? Dove?

Yeah we have the South zone Dove opener Sept 12th weekend (I think?). We have a plot of private land all set up with some open fields and small ponds, we'll be camping and boiling shrimp and grilling bacon wrapped dove all weekend.

After that we have early Teal season but the skeeters are so horrible in the marshes where we hunt I typically skip it, not to mention the gators are very active and the dogs are at risk while it's still warm. From there October starts bow season and I'll actually hunt it this year. In the past it's so darn hot hiking through the West Texas canyons I couldn't stand it but this year I've got a plan and need to do some scouting of new areas anyway. If that doesn't work then we'll just go catch Stripers from the lake all day. The real hunting comes Nov-end of Jan and I've planned to take every Friday off work for the entire stretch so it could get really interesting.

Once again you have me drooling, now I am thinking about jalapeños filled with cream cheese, dove on top, and wrapped in bacon. YUM!
Sounds like a great set up on private land.

I understand the October hunting part completely.... I was battling 90s last year in OK during early season.
    It was not pleasant.

How far up in Texas do you hunt? I found this great place out east of Amarillo that is bow only, they only allow 5 people to hunt it a day, and it's loaded with good deer.

I already have my places to go, but it might be something I check out once or twice this year.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your Nov-Jan seasons.

We don't typically go North, from here we go all other directions lol. I'm always looking for new trips though so I'm all ears when it comes to new places.

Hooked into a few of them. Overall had a good time, but my one buddy just turns into a monstrous jackass/drunk... Kind of wrecked my trip.

    You know how it works!

Redfish is a great bartering tool for elk meat

I'm still trying to make it down to Sarasota for tarpon season, but I think I have too many hunting trips planned for the year.

Good luck if you get out for flounder or trout.

    LOL...

I was cleaning out the cooler and my daughter spotted the small bucket of night crawlers.

Before I knew it she was feeding the crawlers to the chickens one at a time. She was holding onto one end and the birds were trying to pull the other end in a strange sort of worm based tug of war!
