So far as I know it's virtually impossible to quit smoking and lose weight... It's more a matter of reducing the amount you gain...
Nicotine is a stimulant that you've been putting in rather serious quantities in your body for quite some time, so your metabolism will slow down... Well not slow down so much as "Return to a healthy normal"
Then of course a lot of people eat more because nicotine is also a mild appetite suppresant (Like most stimulants)
I put it down on my 29th birthday and haven't touched a cigarette since... Along with shaving my head, going to college and conceiving my daughter it's one of the best choices I ever made.6'4"

Yeah they're home now and I'm already in the process of building routines, but my wife is still sort of lurching from one impulsive reaction to the next as her hormones are still out of whack.
So far the only casualty has been the last 2 toes on my right foot, from the bassinet when she kept crunching my toes and couldn't figure out how me saying "Stop... Stop... Stop." had anything to do with what the babies last sneeze meant.
It's pretty cool, the baby knows who I am just from the sound of my voice. If other people walk into the room she doesn't acknowledge them. But if I walk into a room and say something she will turn towards me. Same thing with people picking her up. If she's fussing and someone other than my wife and I pick her up she will still fuss... But if I pick her up she will instantly go back to sleep and make little cooing sounds.
Lets hope this trend continues!6'4"

Ran out for a bit and picked up an army of nutritious breast feeding friendly fruits and meats... Then came back... Took the baby after her last feeding and just rocked her while watching Doctor Who!
When I walk and Rock her I still hold her with both hands, and so I've had to find a lot of interesting ways to scratch my nose on a door jamb!

LOL... Already have 3 snuggies!
Things are still going well here... Baby has been up at night, but it's a lot rougher on my wife than on me as in the early stages of breast feeding I'm useless, while the baby is trained on the breast and we wait for the milk to come in.
The more we look at her the more and more of my face we see in her... She's got my wife's hair (THANK GOD) and her nose if a mix of the two of us... The rest is all me... Including hands long legs and my evolution toe.
We might just be raising Nainoette!

On day 2 no cigarettes. My weight fluctuates a lot. 3 days ago 185 (night) and this morning 175 (SRS). Am I a mutant? I need to just do morning weigh-ins. Nuff said not making this my blog lol.
Nainoa you do know your name has it's source is a Hawaiian expression meaning "Protector of children, navigator" which seems timely enough. I had a Guru bless me and gave me the name Anandamaya which mean bliss, joy. This referred to the true essence of me.
Lightly snowing here. Craving outdoors nature hiking. Not a big city boy really.

Yeah back in the 90's when I was traveling a lot I ended up spending 3 days in a Nevada truck stop with a Kahuna Mystic who gave me the name saying it was the name of my true self. He explained that it had a dual meaning in the Hawaiian culture, in the old traditions the Nainoa was the navigator who lead the people across the water by the stars and it meant "The Way Finder."
Once they were settled the Nainoa was a position held in each land division/kingdom by the oldest yet most able warrior. Since the old Hawaiian tribes often warred with each other and divided up their lands in pie wedge shapes, an invading village would wait till they saw a group of men go out fishing or on a long hunting trip up mountain before they would attack, and when/if something like that happened the the Nainoa was the last line of defense. Often leading the women and children towards refuge while distracting the enemy from finding them... Then once safe the Nainoa would sabotage the attackers attempts to occupy, OR he would be the last man standing in the refuge if the attackers found the women and children.
Oddly enough I met the Kahuna Mystic in a Nevada truck stop... And then years later I met a Nevada trucker at one of the most sacred of the Hawaiian Heiaus!
The trucker was... Let's say... "Less Eloquent!"
Well... Just a drive by post... My Morning shift with the baby completed... Then I made my wife lunch and a big fruit smoothie, fed both of them and put them down for their naps... Time for me to go out and snow blow the last, most recent, snow storm... Re-Again!6'4"

I'm a magical animal and also can fly away
Long weekend here in Canada with family day on Monday. Going to re-register with the big training gym I used to go to. Training went into a slump for awhile, not consistent. Got through second day of no cigarettes (smoked for years) and upping roadwork. Arrived home to top doorstep just as racoon arrived. We went our separate ways lol.

Yeah I'm still gearing up for "Coon Wars 2013"
This time I've got a 22 out by the garden for them and their skunk allies!
Keep up the good work on the non-smoking...
When I quit the first week was the hardest... But after the second week you'll notice your wind improving...
And if you keep up on your leg lifts, there will probably be a "Quantum Leap" around week 4 to week 6.
In fact for me, when I quit between (I think it was) week 6 and week 8 my squat weight went up 50 pounds effortlessly.
Quitting smoking might be tough, but it really is worth it.
AND if this is your first quit attempt (Like mine was) It's way less mental torture to quit and stay quit, than it is to quit, go back... Quit... Go back... Quit
The more times you quit and go back to smoking the harder the next quit is because you've got excuses to puss out the next time. And in this life it's important to teach yourself how to be stronger, not how to accept what it feels like to be weaker.
To toss you one of my favorite quotes by Primo Levi:
"The sea's only gifts are harsh blows and, occasionally, the chance to feel strong. Now, I don't know much about the sea, but I do know that that's the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions, facing blind, deaf stone alone, with nothing to help you but your own hands and your own head...”6'4"

Oh great... Now I have to share a Chinese Zodiak sign with you?
The Horror...
The Horror...
The Horror....
Hey I suppose I should look all that Zodiak stuff up about my daughter huh?
EDIT: Okay... So I looked it up and she's a Snake in the Chinese and an Aquarius in the other... But when I read the descriptions, neither one of them sounds like her!

Very poetic. Also "Power is made perfect in weakness". Now that invokes a possible lengthy discussion on the meaning of that verse.
Getting all my wind back and increasing cardio is a goal. I think of the song Breathe by The Hollies.
Meditating, training with cardio and yet smoking just created disonance. Day 3.

There is a reason why Nainoa-ism #1 is "Personal Accountability is the high water mark of a man, don't live your life making low tide excuses."
But I've also adapted a saying from "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" Adapted to my own personal philosophy
"Life is about choice, you choose to be a victim or you choose to be a warrior, your suffering and your challenges are your training."
The Warriors way in life isn't about being invulnerable to the steel toed boot challenges of life that kick you in the square in the spiritual twig and berries. It's about having the courage to allow yourself to be affected by the experiences of your life, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable, because the first step in gaining strength is understanding and working on improving your weakness.
It's a principle that's written into the very fabric of existence, that a thing must first be destroyed or damaged before a better thing can be created out of it... It's true of nucelar genesis in a star, it's true of glaciers cutting through stone, and it's just as true in how micro-tears in muscle from working out cause the body to repair the muscle in a way that makes it stronger for the next challenge.
It took me A LOT of years and a A LOT of personal challenges to understand that fact... And even more time and pain to accept it so deep down in my bones that it makes my piss smell funny. But now when a big challenge comes into my life I don't scream "Oh Shid we're gonna die" and light a garbage can on fire... I don't think "Gee I don't know what I'm gonna do."
Instead I rub my hands together and give a little thanks that now I can clearly see the new challenge that stands before me, preparing me for the mysteries that lead to new and better wisdom.6'4"

Yes. Incidentally read that book. There is mindfulness, receptivity/openess, that may lead to love-wisdom. Ancient ferns buried deep in the fiery belly of the earth may become diamonds. There is always the cyclic and transformative element in the universe. Just got out to see how the snow melted on the balcony and a bird circled very near above me that I could not identify. Hawk like wings. Then flew off to the north. Getting myself in gear for some hiking about. I enjoy our exchanges.
