Is Eating Clean Really Needed ?

Guess, I just plain do not understand watching what you eat and tracking your intake. My original problem was being to thin and not being able to gain weight. I do take on average 3 protein shakes per day, not just any shakes, I take N - Large 3 which is a weight gainer. I eat continually through the day, sometimes good - sometimes not so good because it makes no difference with my metabalism. Just guess I do not understand it from the other perspective, I have people ask me for advise, pretty much I do not have any for them except to be active. To gain weight is the other issue that many never see, or think about, the only way I could do it was to lift weights and gain muscle. When I see the skinny kids in the gym I know exactly what they are thinking and how they feel, I will be 43 soon and still a metabalism that will not quit.

As long as you hit your calorie targets and meet the macro requirements, the rest is optional IMO. Sure, eating clean will help you feel better, but I don't believe it has any impact on how well or fast you gain / lose weight. Clean eating can be better for hunger management, but that's about it.

I am of the opinion it does not matter what you put into your body, but what you with it once you put it there.

Something else I read somewhere that kind of relates is what are you planning on doing in the next three hours? Think of some preparing for a marathon, they carb up. Think of someone preparing for the body building stage, they carb down.

I just make a conscious effort to eat healthy and hit my macros. That's what makes me feel best and there's no stress associated with my diet. Gotta keep it all fun and repeatable for the long term!

Define "clean" first so we're all taking about the same thing.

It seems from reading on this forum that people use "clean" to mean low fat, if that's the case then my answer to your question is no you don't need to eat clean, in fact then I'd then don't eat clean if you want to build muscle and strength.

To me "clean" means no processed foods, things you with names too long to read on labels, etc.

If you just mean for increasing lifts then just hit your macros really.

If you mean eating whole unprocessed foods then it is likely a better way to eat in general for the long term. There are reasons to ensure you're eating regular food for long term health and decreased risk of lifestyle diseases (diabetes, heart disease, etc).

ID, you are so scientific with your nutrition, that I gotta ask..

Is your pizza hand made, stone gound, organic dough, topped with with home grown organic vegetables and grain fed chicken /beef toped with choice select cheese?

Boy you may have opened a can of worms with that one!

Pizza is a favorite of mine. So much so that I built a authentic domed brick over in the back yard (as part of our outdoor kitchen)

Yes....dough is hand made with imported Caputo 00 (a fine Itallin flour known to be the best for pizza) It allows very high hydration levels needed for cooking in a brick oven. Tomatoes are imported SanMarzano romas. I actually did take a stint at making my own cheese.....but found that a good whole milk from the store was just as good.

    Here are some pics

    During construction

    Mmmmmm Pizza!

Been lazy lately though and just ordering out. Going to start firing up the oven again now.....ready for some fun evenings.

can of worms or not.... HOLY SH!T that is amazing!!!! I am going to PM you when I build out my back yard for our outdoor kitchen. I was planning a center island with sink and built in cutting board. On either side was going to be a stainless pit/ smoker and opposite a 5 burner stove/oven. I think a kick a$$ brick oven would be perfect opposite the pool....

    That looks awesome I_D

That is kind of what I did as well with the kitchen. I also plumbed for a sink but have not put it in yet.

The pizza oven and fp is flanked by a built-in grill and cabinets with a fridge on the other side. I put granite tops on the cabinets I made. It came out real nice.

Also wired it with low-voltage lights so at night it has nice lighting.

    Yes.....I know..... I have issues!

OP, everyone is different. People respond differently to different regimes. For some, simply looking at macros works, for others, they have to manage down to the calorie.

For me, I find timing is key. I eat whatever I want... but I don't eat it whenever I want it. I find that works well for me.

    Mmmmmm Pizza!

Been lazy lately though and just ordering out. Going to start firing up the oven again now.....ready for some fun evenings.

It all depends on how strict you want your diet to be. I just shoot for my protein goals mainly, get the rest in a good mix of fat and good carbs. I too avoid processed foods and make better choices whether I eat at home or out. I'm the cook at home and everyone eats what I make, they're not too fussy.

To me, it is as simple as this:
