Here's what went down...
I work for an off-campus student housing property, and since I live on the property, I utilize the gym often.
It's a decent gym, here's some pics:
Anyways, there's this on going problem and that's every morning when I get in there, there's dumbbells, plates, medicine-balls everywhere. It's fuarking annoying and one of my huge pet-peeves (put chit back where you found it). Awhile ago I posted signs around the walls/mirrors asking people to be courteous and to replace your weights when you're done.
There's this chick I see in there often, she's tall like 6' and in good shape (4/10 kinda manly) but last night I was in there and saw her leave her dumbbells on the other side of the gym by the mats.
As she walked by me to exit I stopped her and said: "Are those your dumbbells by the mats?"
She said: "Yea, I'm done with them."
I Answered: "Then you should probably put them back where they belong."
She gave me the meanest look then went and put them back. Was I in the wrong here? I've never talked to her before, but this chit is seriously annoying me and I feel like I needed to say something.

You're not being a dick, but you are on the verge of being a gym nazi. I agree with you though... people should put stuff back. It takes an extra 5 seconds. If people are at the gym working out you'd have to think their not so lazy they can't take the extra 5 seconds to put stuff back.
Sounds like the gym is free though so you'll probably just have to put up with it if the signs aren't working.

I don't think you did anything wrong. She did. Most people don't like a mess at the gym and don't want to have to look all over the place when they need a certain set of dumbbells. If she can't read the signs and pick up after herself to show respect to fellow people using the gym (who put their sh!t back so she can find the dumbbells she needs without a hassle), then she should expect to be made aware of that. Seems like a kunt thing to give you a pissy look just because you suggested she follow a rule that actually makes sense.

The gym here is like that. All of the marines like to do circuit training too so it is hard to tell if they are coming back to something or if they are done with it and just not putting it back.
**** gets everywhere. Had to go over to the benches yesterday to get another bumper plate for my deadlift. I figured since one side had 2 plates and a 25 and the other had a plate and the bumper (wtf) that no one was using it.
I put all the other weights back but **** is a mess. Also on the weight holding stands you have to move a plate or something usually to get to a 10lb because they aren't in any kind of order.

Right. I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt the first time... in regards to the mean look she gave me. Maybe she was just having a real bad day, I don't know what is going on in her life. But it could have all been avoided had she practiced proper gym etiquette.

Yes you're being a dick. It's not YOUR gym. You aren't gym management, hell you don't even pay to live there/use the gym like other people do. If anything, you have less rights than anyone else there. You shouldn't be hanging any signs and especially shouldn't be opening your mouth and telling people what to do. If the real residents have a problem with the way the gym is left then they should do something about it themselves and take it up to someone that manages the facilities. Not just a worker trying to take advantage of the free gym.
Yes, you're in the wrong. I always put my stuff back where I found it in the gym but if I ever decided not to, and another member said what you said to me....hell I'd tell him to STFU and GTFO
