Technically Hispanics are of Spanish descent and Spain is in Europe. And Spanish people look generically white to me. But how come Hispanics try to classify their own race(to gain government benefits)?

hispanic isn't a race. Some hispanics are white (Spain, much of Argentina), some are black(Many of the famous baseball players from Dom Rep.), some are brown (most central American,Mexicans). Hispanic simply means you come from a spanish speaking country.

Usually:

Argentina, Chile, much of Colombia, Cubans= white

Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, other parts of Central America, most of Peru, most of Venezuela= Amerindian/Mestizo (there are a lot of white Venezuelans too though)

Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, chunks of Cuba= Black/Mulatto (there is also strong Taino mixture in Puerto Ricans as well, and lesser so in Cuba)

This is just a general outline though. There are many exceptions in all countries.

Depends their are really a couple of hispanics.

Mexians for example can be Aztec/Mayan/Inca roots and also Spain.

Cuban can be African/Spain. I'm Cuban and Spain and identify myself as white.

So it can go both ways but generally its to gain benefits when its a majority of people.
