I have not had a chance to shoot a G19 but I might just ask my father in law to look into it. My home defense firearm is my 12 gauge. I am looking to finish my CHL this coming year and am not a big fan of the two pistols I have (compact Taurus 380 and a Ruger 357 revolver). I can say that from what I have seen the G17 was the most simple to clean and care for. However, I was not a fan of the trigger ( can be changed for fairly cheap). My favorite gun to shoot of the three was the Springfield 1911. It felt very natural. But I have a hard time spending closer to $1k when I can pick up a G17 for a little more than $400.
Thanks for the input Vox, I will look into the G19s.

What did you dislike about the G17 trigger?
It sounds like you are a gun noob who does better with (and consequently likes) the triggers that are the shortest and lightest (single actin like a 1911 > double action semi auto like G17 > double action revolver) mostly because you haven't learned how to pull triggers without disrupting the gun

You answered your own question - go for the Springfield. What feels good in your hand may not feel so great in mine, so the right choice for you probably isn't the right choice for someone else.
In related news: went to the range with the wife on Friday to shoot our new H&K USP. She loved it. Loading the mags sucks - got a loader and a 3rd mag on the Christmas list. Need to make time to get my CCW and then a holster as well.My Journal (RIP 05/11 - 09/13):

Low and right is classic and very common for a left handed pistol shooter. You simply lack proper trigger press. You are clenching your trigger hand and torquing the gun to the right as you squeeze the trigger, = shots go right.
You are either flinching or pushing the gun down prematurely in anticipation of the recoil = shots go low.
Next time you shoot get some snap caps or dummy rounds. Load them randomly into multiple magazines. Mix the magazines up so you don't know when the dummy/snap cap will be. Shoot slow. FOCUS ON THE FRONT SITE. Smoothly press the trigger. When the gun goes *click* instead of *bang*, you'll see the front site dive down/right. Practice until that front site doesn't move when the trigger falls. Do a bunch of dry firing if necessary.
Do you know if you are right or left eye dominant? Look at something on the wall on the other side of the room, like a vent or clock or something. Extend an arm and put your thumb over that object. Close your eyes one at a time. The the that, when open, has your thumb blocking your view of the object, is your dominant eye. If you can't get that to work, make a triange with your index fingers and thumbs touching, looking at the object through the triangle. At arms length Move your hands towards your face until they touch. Whichever eye your hands go to is your dominant eye

....Yeah, not playing in this stupid fuhking IDP league again. Just realized he has us starting 3 WRs and 2 more in flex spots, but he changed the points from the default of 10 yards = 1 point to 15 yards = 1 point. Totally making WRs the weakest scoring position in the league...
>.< Serious **** this stupid league, never again.▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #56 ▪█─────█▪

I'm just wondering why you are complaining about the changed scoring...in week 12.
Scoring can be changed mid-season, last I checked (did it before to make a correction a few years ago), usually when somebody complains about changed scoring 3 months into the season, it was changed recently, not 4 months ago.

I was thinking about getting a gun to go shooting but I feel like it'd be a waste of money and I'd get bored after like a few weeks.

I wouldn't even know what mine are these days but I do find it amusing when dudes hovering around 200lbs and lean claim 18-19" pipes.
Or maybe they measure their arms when they were fat and then keep that stat when they lean out. A lot of bullshít gets posted on this site.
