I don't use chalk currently, but I used it regularly for years and never caught any flak for it. I kept my hands in the bag while chalking up, didn't touch anything but the bar, and cleaned up when finished. I even took a spray bottle and rag to the floor where the barbell sat. By the time I left, you wouldn't have known that I used chalk at all. I know management saw me using it, and I'm sure the fact that I cleaned up after myself kept them from ever saying anything about it.

I have a home gym, so I can use so much chalk you'll think Pacino shot the joint up.

1) In no way does "bimmer" = "beemer/beamer" pronunciation. That's just not how english works.
2) Straps should not be for deadlifts unless you're concentrating on volume over strength.
3) the GTA4 port to PC wasn't too good, so I can understand a controller being used. Not for XCOM though.
3a) COL Barkley Farlesworth, do not waste your gift card + $10 on another CoD game. It is dumb. I would suggest Halo 4 before that.

Because having a strong grip is pretty important, and chalk helps a ton more. Most places don't mind as long as you don't make a huge mess out of it.
Just from personal experience, using straps for <3 rep sets of deadlifts felt like it was more work than it was worth. I'll use them all day for >10-rep sets, SLDLs, and/or rack pulls though.the crew that poop poop poops crews crew

I only use straps when I have to.
I'm not competing so it's stupid for me to let my grip strength be the limiting factor in my deadlift.
I train my grip separately from my deadlift.
I only use a DOH grip.

Drove to my FIL's place today:
1. Saw a Doritos truck.
2. Heard "Africa" by Toto and thought of toilets.
3. Guy in front of me at Whataburger had stitches in the back of his head; thought of Shoup.

I do have some CoC grippers, but don't use them as often as I probably should. Most of my grip training is done with static holds. Usually on deadlift day I'll do my last warmup (~85% working weight) DOH w/chalk and hold it for as long as I can (but no longer than 10 seconds), then after my workset I'll back off and do either singles with holds as long as I can, or maybe some triples with 5 second holds between reps. I try to do something similar when I do rack pulls.

Wish I had seen those before I made my cranberry junk.
It's half cranberries, quarter canned "whole cranberries," and some mixed berries all blended together.
Any chance that cranberry/bourbon mix can be done same-day? If not I suppose I could have myself a second thanksgiving this weekend. Pretty sure some of the pies will go on sale after tomorrow.the crew that poop poop poops crews crew

While I see your point, due to being of the same mindset a while back, it felt much more awkward to get all situated with the straps and THEN pull, rather than just wiping some chalk on my hands, walking up to the bar and lifting it.
Depends on how you feel about bringing chalk into your lifting area though, but the few times I've used it I was surprised at how well it worked.
And speaking of lifting areas, I think I'm going to get a home gym setup as a Christmas+birthday present to myself. Rack, adjustable bench, barbell, 600+ lbs worth of plates. Maybe adjustable DBs... iffy about them though.
Score. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see how things go. Any spices?the crew that poop poop poops crews crew

Nope, just the bourbon.
I refuse to use anything but DOH on my deadlifts, and while my DOH grip strength is pretty strong, even with chalk it isn't strong enough for my max effort deadlift sets - so I use straps. If I were competing I would just use a mixed grip, but there a a lot of negatives associated with a mixed grip so I just stick with DOH and straps.
Congrats on the home gym. I love mine and will be rebuilding it in my new house. My Journal (RIP 05/11 - 09/13):

People who can't work straps quickly & easily are possible candidates for the sun cannon. You better hope you have other redeeming qualities.
About grip strength... totally overrated. That being said, I've been enjoying the hell out of rope climbing at my gym. I really wish I had a rope strung up on a tall branch at my house. I would tear that up until my tendinitis knocked me down while on vacation.-

Not saying the strap method took a long time, but it was definitely longer than wiping some chalk on, walking up and lifting. Especially if it's only for a couple reps.

They still slow you down at the start of a deadlift and I generally find them to be a PITA and only use them when I have to.
Most powerlifters tend to have decent forearms from simply gripping a barbell so I wouldn't write it off if it's a weak point.
