I don't know that a straight popular vote is the right answer, either. I just think the current system blows.
If we could get more than two strong candidates on a ballot, and more voters were semi-intelligent than not, we could rank order our selections. Run it through on first place votes, and if there isn't a 2/3 majority, then add in the second place votes and recount. Do it again if necessary.

Easiest and most straightforward way to do it.
BTW, it's ridiculous how true certain things are:
1. Cities will vote Democrat
2. Rural America will vote Republican
3. Unions will vote Democrat
4. Older people will vote Republican
etc.
California should troll the nation and vote Republican just to freak everyone out.☠ By reading this post, you have agreed to my negative reputation terms of service.

The changing landscape in the Senate will be the bigger story once the dust settles from this election. Mark my words.
Republicans lost some insanely crucial strongholds in every corner of the country. Mostly due to the Tea Party nutters and rape philosophers.
This is my post from a few months ago:

Which I link to because I believe tonight will be the initiation of a cleansing of the Republicans from the maniacs in their ranks. Not to mention an effort to adapt to the changing demographics and POV of the country.
Without which they can kiss any future election goodbye.

Two people at work today talked about their elementary school kids holding a mock election, with Obama winning 90% to Romney at 10%. Awful big disparity vs. the popular vote, so it's not coming from their parents.
The teachers at those schools should be ashamed of themselves.☠ By reading this post, you have agreed to my negative reputation terms of service.

A nutsack hair is what's decided/fought over in most of our elections.
Landslides are the exception, not the norm. Local to presidential.
Regarding the past 4 years quip, Obama isn't Mao. It takes more than one man and a willingness to compromise by the opposition for a healthy presidency. Latter of which he did not get, and didn't get in a very hostile way.
Plenty party goals were completed in tough conditions. Plenty more to come if he wins tonight.
Get over it.

I'm a teacher (high school). My mother was a grade school teacher for 33 years. My father was a grade school/middle school teacher for 36 years.
Yet, I have to say that I agree with you.
Used to not be that way, but somewhere along the line teaching became the job that your average sorostitute got keen on.
Case in point: My son has to come up with spelling word each week that follow one of the rules they're studying. I try to come up with less common words so that I can explain to him what they mean. Half the time he probably doesn't give a sh*t about the word, but it makes him listen and learn. One week, the rule was the -ird and -ard sound. I told him to right down bard.
Teacher tells him it's not a word. ragepalm.jpg
EDIT: Gotta say that part ain't true, at least here in Texas. The lefties that teach tend to have a better grasp about what is going on, especially locally. Our Republican state congress is constantly f*cking with education in this state. Here Lies the Rant

If the Dems win the presidency and the senate it could imply a mandate for many of Obama's policies, such as Obamacare, rather than the house-cleaning KVK is talking about.
Gotta wonder where certain issues like quantitative easing (printing money), health care, deficit spending, etc. is going to go. IMO, right now is not the time for either party to think that America is giving them the keys to the city.☠ By reading this post, you have agreed to my negative reputation terms of service.
