The problem was that Shane was running out of Story Responsibilities.
He'd gone too rogue to the point where he was making it hard for the rest of the crew to operate like a well oiled machine.
The same was true of Dale. (Though I liked his character more than Shane)
I mean what the hell would Dale have been doing "Through the winter" when they were moving the group with military precision. Dale Represented how a group fails by being too cerebral and thinking too much about how we need to preserve the old world in the new world of the Walker Apocalypse. Shane represented how a group fails by being too hot headed and apathetic and just abandoning the things worth keeping in the old values in the Walker Apocalypse.
Both of them had to die/leave the story line in order for the group to be what it is now.
The only way I see that Shane could have been kept around would be if he would have gone to the "Others" with Randall, joined them... Eventually taken over leadership of the group and then become a recurring villain who was trying to get Lori and Carl etc...6'4"

In their particular environment, I believe that situations will be encountered where hesitation will result in more harm than good. I felt like Shane was aware of this issue and was willing to do what may become necessary (even if unpopular). Some of the other characters (I feel) are unwilling to do what may become necessary to survive.

This may be the case, however I did enjoy the balance Shane brought to the group. I have difficulty watching a group composed of only "goody two shoe" type characters. It seems too bland with only the goofy pregnant wife supplying drama.
Hopefully, there will be some more unpredictable type characters in the folks they meet up with inside the prison.brb eating...

I kind of like how they skipped the winter. At first I was thrown off with Carl helping to clear the house but then it became clear that he's picked up a lot over the winter. Lori being closer to popping also spares us some of the pregnancy drama. They'll probably do flashbacks before the opening credits like they did previously (i.e., showing Shane at the hospital with Rick, the car jam outside of Atlanta, etc.)
And was that a flashlight that Rick modified into a silencer? (Edit:^^^^Wizard^^^^) I saw that and my mind started to wonder how feasible that would be. Carl's silencer gave his gun an outer-spacy ray-gun look.

So they had a drill, tap & die set, and baffling equipment on hand? Seems legit.
Also lol'd at them "driving around in circles" for 7 months without once stumbling upon the prison.Near, far, wherever you are...

See in real life I'm very "Rick" and I often have to deal with Shane type personalities... Guys who want to be the Alpha male, but they think that leadership is about authority, when really leadership is about taking responsibility for the success of everyone in the group.
Guys like Shane always bring a group down...
The group right now as an assault force couldn't exist right now if it had been Shane that survived the killing field. Maggie would've twisted her ankle on some random Tuesday in January and Shane would have left her for dead "Because sometimes you gotta make the tough choices."
When really you lose Maggie (The only real hot chick left in the group) and at the same time everyone else starts feeling and thinking "Well, what happens if I twist my ankle next week, will I just be left behind?"
Everyone twists an ankle or bumps their head, so everyone starts thinking about their exit plan, since it means it's inevitable that Shane will leave everyone behind. The loyalties of the group would be fractured and without well oiled machine of a group, no one survives.
It's this EXACT dynamic that is taught in all of the combat forms of the armed forces. Even Navy SEALS are taught teamwork first and foremost, because you have to be able to rely on the team with implicit trust.6'4"

You know it just occurred to me... Shane's body is just laying in a ditch somewhere!
Carl put him down and the herd came charging in... IIRC that's the only member of the group that wasn't burried. (Other than the guy who chose to die by the tree in Season 1)6'4"

I think it's interesting how they talk about the herds migrating and merging...
I mean if the Herds are piling up in places, makes you think there must be other places in the world/country where there's just a major open expanse of walkerless space????6'4"

I was thinking this....
They pretty much said if you are quiet the walkers will go away so why didnt they just go back and rebuild the farm, especially how much more advanced they are now in their zombie killing tactics. I also would have though the farm house would have been more fortified than it was. There were multiple structures they could have used the wood for to do it and all the fencing they had.China is asshoe !!!

Article from CNN.com:
'Walking Dead' premiere gets fall's biggest rating
By James Hibberd, EW.com
updated 5:57 PM EDT, Mon October 15, 2012
Sunday night's third season premiere of "The Walking Dead" delivered a 5.8 rating from adults 18-49.STORY HIGHLIGHTS
"The Walking Dead's" third season premiere attracted 10.9 million viewers
It was already the the most successful basic cable drama of all time in the adult demo
Last night was up more than 50 percent from season two
(EW) -- The third season premiere of a basic cable zombie drama just delivered a bigger rating in the adult demo than any entertainment series this fall — including all broadcast shows.
Sunday night's third season premiere of "The Walking Dead" delivered a huge 10.9 million viewers for its first telecast. But what's really impressive is the show's adults 18-49 demo rating of a 5.8.
That's stunning.
The closest broadcast entertainment programs has gotten this fall to that number is ABC's "Modern Family" season premiere that pulled a 5.5 (all these are apples-to-apples next-day ratings, not including DVR). Football has delivered bigger numbers, but that's sports and we're talking entertainment programming. And AMC accomplished this rating with an extra disadvantage — not having a major distributor, Dish Network, on board due to its carriage contract dispute (imagine how many more viewers the episode might have had with Dish on board). You know, aside from AMC's other major disadvantage being a pay cable network that's only available to a fraction of U.S. households compared to the Big Four broadcasters.
"The Walking Dead" was already the the most successful basic cable drama of all time in the adult demo. Last night was up more than 50 percent from season two. And if you include "The Walking Dead's" encore telecast in the mix — which is a common habit for cable networks when touting their ratings — the total viewer number rises to 15.2 million. Sure, it's two airings, but still ... that's edging into NCIS territory.
This hasn't been a great fall for broadcast so far. Three of the four major networks are down compared to last fall, with NBC — aided by "The Voice" — rising somewhat. For a cable show to come along and prove that getting a huge rating in the valuable adult demo for a third-year show is still very possible must give pause. Broadcasters, after all, turned down "The Walking Dead." As the show's writer Robert Kirkman told EW.com: "There definitely was resistance to dive into the genre. [Network executives] were like, 'I don't know if we want dead people eating people on our network.' That makes sense."
Interestingly, the biggest new drama of the fall is NBC's "Revolution," which as I've pointed out, plays a bit like "The Walking Dead" without zombies (or people eating people).
Last night's premiere will probably be remembered as the hour that set a record for zombie killing. How many was that? Seventy? Eighty? After last season's fan complaint of too much farm chatting and not enough zombie killing, the third season premiere's orgy of kill-shots surely satisfied fan blood lust (though left me wanting an Xbox controller in my hands).
