Thanks guys! I PM'ed Iceman to see what he thinks, I'll leave that in his hands. I think my IIFYM the easy way would be better sticky material but if you guys think this one shoudl be I tossed it to a mod to decide as that is their job not ours.

In any event I think this answers a lot of the new threads we get asking if skinny-fat fairly new lifters should bulk or cut in detail.

Honestly I think most if not all of your vids are sticky material...so many people come and don't understand the reading material and you talk it out...helps for people with different learning styles

This video is everything I've been looking for. I'm 170 skinny/fat and you addressed every issue and every question I've had. I can't tell you how much I felt like you were talking directly about ME in the video because you addressed the issue so well. Skinny/Fat Is so hard because we want to get a 6 pack and get rid of the gut, but we also want to be bigger upper body/arms. You really hit the nail on the head and I will be subscribing to your videos on YouTube. Thank you so much man!

Actually not a bad idea. Some topics like this, your IIFYM, etc, that are not covered in the stickies already, all in one thread and stickied.

If you would sticky every video/topic Jason has made that deserves a sticky, there will be no room for regular threads in the first page Lol

I've been wanting to start my channel for about 6 months actually and now that I've gotten around to it I don't see myself not making at least a video or two a week for a long time. Thanks for the compliments everyone.

If anyone has questions about the content of the video or the topic in general, feel free to ask them here as well.

Great video Jason, quick question though.

If I'm skinnyfat and a newb lifter, and my primary goal is to lose the fat, why wouldn't I work out and eat at a small deficit instead of a surplus? That way I would be taking advantage of the noob gains/nutrient partitioning to build muscle while eating in accordance with my primary goal.

    Does that make sense?

I take a cheap multi, with 100% RDA, on days when I don't eat any fruits or veggies other than sauces, like if my diet for the day constists 100% of chicken breasts, whey and ice cream. This happens around once a week.

It makes sense, but I think it is a bad idea. Skinny-fats always look terrible after a cut and you will not look like you lift after 6 months of slow cutting. You might gain very little muscle doing a small deficit. There are a lot of factors on the later but statistically you, as a skinny-fat, will probably not pull off what you are trying to achieve this way. My video advice was not done arbitrarily, however you are free to take it or leave it. A better solution if you on the higher end of the bf scale as a skinny-fat is just to keep the surplus very small, right at 10%, so that you recomposition more or just go a little higher on it and after you've gained 20 lbs of muscle use your new metabolism to cut up quickly in 8 or 9 months.

Appreciate the answer. Most skinny-fat types I've dealt with don't take well to the mention of a surplus no matter how you word it, so I was just interested in what your take on the deficit strategy was. Considering most of them are worried more about not being fat rather than being muscular (ymmv), I think it would still be appropriate.

Good point about the metabolism after the muscle gain though, I hadn't thought about that.

That is something many do not consider. It is a lot easier, and allows one to eat a lot more food if they get on a legitimate program, bust ass gain 20 lbs of muscle and go from the bar feeling heavy to benching 185x5 and squating 275x5 before going on a cut. On top of that the heavy workload for months and the small surplus will improve work capacity, improve thyroid fuction and massively improve insulin sensitivity. Cutting then vs cutting before will be like night and day.

You have something blocking it. I doubled checked the settings and it is listed to be viewable on all platform types.

Why am I not surprised this is your opinion... Oh, that sig might have something to do with it. lol

People not concerned with aesthetics would say bulk, people concerned with aesthetics would cut. No offense to you at all Jason, for the most part, I think you are correct and make good arguments as to why you should bulk first. Beyond that, I've watched a few of your videos and read some of your posts. It is clear you help alot of people. However, I just find it weird that personal preference gets stickies. :/ (I'm not at all arguing it should be removed. I dont want it to come across that way.) I came into this thread expecting some scientific/biological reason. lol

I myself, would have said I was "skinny fat" 8 months ago and bulked for 6 months straight. I did it right, counted calories and such. No complaints. However, I am lifting for aesthetic reasons, and if I were to do it again, I would probably do a small cut first. To someone lifting for aesthetics, that belly pouch can me very demotivating. I have read many threads were noobies complain about their fat and lack of visual gains. Beginning weight training can be very frustrating, especially when people just dont realize it takes months and years to get results. Also, I read something on another forum about once you create a fat cell, it only empties and never actually leaves your body, unless you are clinically starved or get lipo, so thats always in the back of my mind. I suppose if you never plan on slipping on your diet, once you lean out, that wouldn't be a concern for you.

Just my way of saying, I personally think this answer differs for individuals.

Those crews are tounge-in-cheek humor. My advice in this video is geared specifically towards getting those individuals to their goal physique and having aesthetics as quickly as possible. By cutting first they are going to take longer to reach this goal. They will not be even remotely aesthetic after the cut, they will see not gain in body fat % if they take my advice and may actually reduce it (did you watch the video?). As to them cutting before or after let me ask you a simple question... do you think that they will be able to trim the same amount of body fat off more easily and more quickly with 15 lbs of additional muscle, largely improved insulin sensitivity and a greatly increased training/workload capacity?

Long term caloric restriction and exercise can cause adipose tissue cell death and that topic isn't even remotely related to this thread. We have mutliple nutrition forum regulars who have been over 300 lbs fat (prior to starting lifting) and have done bodybuilding shows at 5% or lower body fat and were ripped later in life after being obese.

Yes, I watched the video. My point simply was, a noob could recomp at maintenance. As many threads as I've read on here about noobies failing at their initial bulk or noobies being demotivated by belly flab and not seeing immediate results leads me to think someone seeking aesthetics, who is skinny fat, would be best served to cut first, or at least stay at maintenance until they are at a BF% they are happy with. However, if they were not concerned with their current BF, then by all means, bulk away! Most skinny fat people I know are quite concerned with BF. Saying that, its not that your protocol is wrong, I've just seen enough people post on here that can't follow guidelines no matter how simple you make then. They see bulk and its automatically GOMAD. Yes, I know that is not what you advised and no its not your fault they couldn't follow the protocol, but it does happen and somewhat often if this forum was all I had to go by.

Like i said, its just my opinion. Having been there, my results were exactly as you described. I bulked, gained 15lbs and ever so slightly leaner. Yet, if I could do it again, I'd cut first.
