I did have low levels early/mid last year and was prescribed it by my doctor who also recommended it on the basis of my family history of type II diabetes - apparently there is a correlation between lower insulin resistance/higher sensitivity and higher D3 levels.
I am back out of a sh!thole part of Sydney (for a few months now) to near the coast and spend a good part of any day getting some sun, and recent tests have showed my levels are normal now despite not having supplemented for some months.You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.

Thanks gents. Being in Australia with hypersensitive British skin, I'm probably ok. But I do have an office job so not really in the sun a lot through the week. From what I have read the case seems to be that there is no harm in taking it, worst case I'm not deficient and I'm just wasting money..
