BATH TOWNSHIP - A Bath township teacher and head soccer coach committed suicide after submitting a letter of resignation Thursday.
“Effective immediately I am resigning my employment at the Bath Local School District as a teacher and coach for personal reasons,” wrote Jeremy Winegardner in a resignation letter to Bath Superintendent Dale Lewellen.
The Bath School Board held a special meeting at 6 p.m. to approve the letter, but during that time the Allen County Sheriff’s office was dealing with his death.
Sheriff'Sam Crish of the sheriff’s office said they received the call at 5:15 p.m. Thursday and he confirmed Winegardner’s death. The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident.
Bath Superintendent Lewellen was unavailable for comment late Thursday.
Winegardner, 35, was a fifth grade teacher at Bath schools, and a head coach of the Bath High School boys’ varsity soccer team. He lead the Bath varsity soccer team with a 16-1 record in the 2011 season, and had a 10-3 record so far in the 2012 season.
He was also the assistant coach for the girls’ basketball team at Columbus Grove High School.
