When sodium carbonate reacts with sulfuric acid in a metathesis reaction... (3k reps)

and forms sodium sulfate and carbonic acid, what state is the carbonic acid in? Is it a liquid, gas, or solid? I'm stuck between liquid or gas, but I think it's a gas.

What do you mean forms water?

The reaction is a metathesis one, which means they are all aqueous solutions. I know that this reaction forms a weak electrolyte which is the carbonic acid.

    Wut

Surely sodium carbonate + sulphuric acid =====> sodium sulphate, carbon dioxide and water

Why though? I thought in metathesis reactions you switch partners? So why would carbon dioxide and water form, and not carbonic acid? Am I doing something wrong?

the CO2 pushes the reaction to completion, because it is energy favorable

The reaction always yields carbonic acid as a product, which spontaneously decomposes into carbon dioxide and water.

Just talked to my teacher, and I get it.

So carbonic acid does form, but after that it decomposes to H2O and CO2. So should I leave my molecular equation as is, but when I write my net ionic equation, I should write it as the decomposed version?
