    Question Average power lifter bench press

    I weight 160lbs and when doing barbell flat bench press, I do four sets and today I did 175lbs 8 reps, 185lbs 7 reps, 195lbs 5 reps, and 205lbs 4 reps. What does the average competition lifter lift for their 1 rep max? Curious if I should switch my training to more powerlifting and enter a amateur local competition. I am pretty sure I could lift in the range of 225lbs to 235lbs as my 1 rep max currently. Would I be way below the average or am I close enough to really give it a shot?

    You could say that you are about average strength for a "powerlifter" if you could pause 275 at your weight raw. This isnt even really true but its close enough. I'd say a 315 would be above average, whatever that means.

    Man, I am still a good bit away from 275lbs, much less 315lbs. I'll continue my current routine and see where I am at by the end of the year and then make a decision. Thanks guys

    One problem you will have is that you are 5'10" and at that height, only weighing 160 will take you forever to go from 225 to 315. You keep training and eat til you get to about 190-200 and 315 will fly off your chest. That is if you get off that gay ass program you are doing.

    If there's a meet coming up nearby, I say go for it. When I competed last year, I was one of the weakest guys at the meet (960 total at 165), but I still had a fun time. No one's going to make fun of you.
