Green Tea Extract Vs. Green Coffee bean Extract

Green tea extract is the herbal by-product of the green tea leaf. Green tea is one of best plant sources of antioxidants, with the active ingredients of polyphenols, flavonols and epigallocathechin gallate (EGCG). By weight, green tea extract has 100 times the amount of antioxidant power compared to vitamins C and E. Green tea has been used for centuries as an anti-aging, anti-cancer and weight-control substance.

    Cellular Protection and Glucose Regulation
Antioxidants help protect the body from free radicals which damage cellular structures. The abundant supply of antioxidants in green tea acts as an immune booster to counteract the effects of aging and disease. Green tea extract has been proven to lower the "bad" (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood, while also preventing inflammation and protecting your joints. A 2004 study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" and cited by the Life Extension Foundation, emphasized the effects of green tea extract as a quicker source of antioxidants compared to vitamins alone. The "Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology" also notes, in an article published in 2009, that green tea can assist in the proper regulation of glucose.

    Cancer Prevention
According to the University of Tokyo, which conducted a study under Dr. Kuzushige Kawai, EGCG (a powerful component of green tea) inhibited HIV from binding to human T-cells. Green tea extract catechins also inhibit the growth of cancer cells by acting as a chemical barrier. A study published in 2004 in "Cancer Research" also found that EGCG binds to a key enzyme that impedes the manufacture of DNA in tumor cells. The effects of green tea extract are similar to the cancer drug Methotrexate, but with fewer side effects.

    Weight Loss
Green tea extract has been shown to increase calorie burn by 4.5 percent, or roughly 70 to 140 calories per day. Without additional caloric restriction or exercise, green tea supplementation can account for an 11- to 18-lb. weight loss in a year. A 2004 article published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" found that green tea extract can increase the rate of energy expenditure in the human body, since the high concentrations of catechin polyphenols found in green tea extract intensify the level of fat oxidation.

    Extract vs. Tea
According to the American Cancer Society, green tea extract is a safe and effective method of antioxidant supplementation. Beneficial results can be seen with one to three capsules of green tea extract taken daily. A 2006 Japanese study also showed two capsules of the extract to be as beneficial as 20 cups of green tea. Green tea extract can be supplemented throughout the day in liquid, leaf or pill form.

    Properties and Precautions
Unlike black tea, green tea is not fermented, which makes its antioxidant properties more potent. Green tea extract contains a more concentrated form of antioxidants compared to the leaf itself. Although green tea extract has numerous benefits, the supplement also contains caffeine, a stimulant that has serious side effects if misused. HerbalMedicine.com notes that people who are allergic or susceptible to stimulants should avoid high doses of green tea extract. Green tea extract is also available in a decaffeinated form, and standardized extracts can be ingested with the same benefits as the caffeinated forms of green tea extract.

Green Coffee Bean Extract Overview Everyone has seen the the late night television “infomercials,” or online advertisements, touting products that are supposed to “reduce body weight overnight.” Although these products are usually supported by personal testimonials to their effectiveness, “hard” scientific evidence in support of such claims has been inadequate regarding most of these products. However, the publication of a study in the medical journal Diabetes Metabolic Syndrome Obesity (January, 2012, p. 21-27) appears to have removed Green Coffee Bean Extract from the list of products with unsupported claims.

Green Coffee Bean Extract Scientific Overview

In this study, 16 individuals who met medical criteria for obesity were given a commercial preparation containing either 700 mg or 1,050 mg of Green Coffee Extract (GCE) or a placebo. All subjects took the preparation given them for 6 weeks and then waited 2 weeks before taking another preparation. The test subjects were instructed to maintain their normal daily dietary and exercise habits.

At then end of the 22-week study period the researchers found that there were significant reductions in weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), and percentage of body fat following pure Green Coffee Bean Extract administration (averages of 8.04 kg in weight loss, a reductions of 2.92 in BMI, and a 4.4% reduction in body fat). Furthermore, they also noted that improvements in these factors were “positively dose-related,” meaning that the greatest improvements occurred with the higher doses of green coffee’s pure chlorogenic acid extract.

As a possible explanation for their findings, the researchers began from the previously well-documented observation that the incidence of Type II (non-insulin) Diabetes is lower in coffee drinkers than in non-coffee users. After other studies had excluded caffeine as the agent responsible for this observation, attention turned to a substance known as Chlorogenic Acid.

Chlorogenic Acid is present in unroasted coffee beans, although most of it (but not all) is destroyed in the roasting process. Chlorogenic Acid has antioxidant properties and is also known to interfere with enzymes that promote absorption of glucose from the intestine as well as the conversion of glucose to glycogen, a major component of the body’s fat cells. Based on these facts, the investigators concluded that the weight loss effect of Green Coffee Bean Extract may be due to its relative abundance of Chlorogenic Acid.

It is known that obesity is a hallmark of Type II Diabetes. Since it is also known that a reduction in body weight is clearly associated with a clinical improvement in Type II Diabetes, pure green coffee extract may play an important future role in the treatment of this condition. Furthermore, given the number of diseases that are linked to chronic obesity (e.g. heart disease, hypertension, and degenerative joint disease), any widely-available natural compound that promotes weight loss could have a considerable, positive, long-term public health impact by lessening the financial and social burdens of these chronic illnesses. Finally, it is hoped that the discovery of pure green coffee bean extracts can lead to significant weight loss results. The scientific reviews of green coffee beans having any legitimate merit towards being a natural and safe anti-obesity agent are promising despite early research efforts.

To summarize, medical reviews of green coffee bean extract have been shown to be effective in reducing both body weight and percentage of body weight due to body fat. If these results can be confirmed in longer-term studies, GCE promises to be a powerful weapon in the treatment of obesity.

What one would you reccomend me to factor into my supplement regimen I am currently taking Green tea but heard of Green coffe bean now I am torn. Any reccomendations

Green Tea and Green Coffee extract have different mechanisms of action. I think they'd actually be a great stack together. Green Tea being thermogenic and aiding fat burning, while Green Coffee blocking glucose release and forcing the body to preferentially burn fat.

Would there be a need for a Fat Burner anymore or would these two suffice?
