What do you guys think about Henry rifles? I think I would like to get Golden boys that I can pass down to my sons. Any thoughts?

I inherited a HGB .22 when my own stepfather passed away. I really haven't shot it much, but it seems to be really well made and heavy. Not really comparable to my other favorite .22 which is the Ruger 10/22 I've spoke about before. The only complaint I have about the rifle is that the front pin site is bent, so you have to get creative when shooting it .
If you twist my arm, I'll take my son out and shoot it a little for you to answer any specific questions.▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #4 ▪█─────█▪

We went back to Deer Creek yesterday and hiked the South Fork. We were there two weeks ago when the creeks were bone dry. The area got rain and snow for the three days preceding our hike. The South Fork was running. I forgot to turn my GPS on for the hike, but one of my hiking companion's phones showed that we had hiked ten miles. I lost track of the number of times we had to cross the creek. I had trouble with the large rounded rocks; old injuries to my foot and ankle make this difficult terrain for me. But it was very pretty and very different from the conditions in which I normally hike.
My wife took this shot of a snow-capped peak. We were hiking towards that peak for most of that hike, but lost sight of it eventually.
A couple of photos of running water. I know this is commonplace for a lot of you, but I don't usually see much water on my hikes.
The area had been burned by the Willow Fire of 2004. Evidence of that persists in a large number of dead trees, some of which we had to clamber across. This portion of the trail is clear though. It's not clear to me if that green bush on the left survived the fire or grew up in the eight or so years since the fire.
One of my hiking companions crosses the creek:

KB,
Nice pics. Looking at that first water pic, the rock on the left, that looks like it is about to cascade down/set for an animal trap, looks like it has west soil under it. However, that looks to be quite a bit above the run-off mark. Does that creek/bed get normal run off? Interesting to see quite a bit of snow in the background.[]---[] Equipment Crew #40 []---[]

Thanks!
For most of the water shots, I set the camera to f/22, ISO 100 in aperture priority mode. I've been shooting bracketed exposures, -2EV, 0EV, and +2EV. The +2EV exposure at f/22 and ISO 100 had a longer exposure time and therefore had frothier looking water than the other shorter exposures. I shot it hand-held though, so the rest of the +2EV exposure wasn't very sharp. (I had a tripod with me, but didn't have time to set it up.) So I used the +2EV exposure for the water and either the 0EV or -2EV exposure for the rest of the scene. The dynamic range of the NEX-7's sensor is good enough that I can often process the RAW files to make exposure adjustments of 2 to 3 EV for different parts of the scene.
The normal way to do this sort of thing is to use a tripod for stability and an ND filter on the lens to get longer exposure times. But I don't have an ND filter for that lens yet and I didn't want to make everyone wait while I set up a tripod.▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #35

It rained quite a lot in the three days preceding the day of our hike. I think it's likely that the water was quite a lot higher during and shortly after the rain showers. My experience with the washes nearer to where I live is that they can rapidly fill up with water during and just after a storm. I think that's what happened in Deer Creek too.
I wish I could've gotten some shots of the snowy mountains that we saw on our drive up. It was really quite spectacular.Last edited by KBKB; 12-17-2012 at 10:34 PM.

I want to do some cardio in my basement, what's the best piece of equipment for that? I can't run because my knees don't appreciate it at my weight, I was thinking an airdyne or some sort but know nothing about them.

I personally like elliptical if running is not an option. Although I did like the airdyne as well. Either one would be a good option imho.

Is there any cardio work you have done in the past that you didn't mind? Have found that the good fit cardio work for some, are the ones that they enjoy(or at least don't mind...). Have a treadmill, commercial upright bike, schwinn and a C-2 rower in the basement. Also use a few different ellipticals at a gym I go to. Never did enjoy doing long runs/1 hour on a bike/etc. My cardio usually consists of 6-8 minutes on a bike - 30 seconds full go with decent amount of tension/30 seconds of rest/minimal no tension pedal. Same on the C-2 rower - 30-40 seconds full go, then 30 seconds off/rest, for 6-7 minutes. Same on the elliptical - 30 seconds at good amount of tension/resistance - 30 seconds off. Schwinn the same way. In a week, I do less than 1 hour total of cardio, and feel that as I approach 50, am in fairly decent shape overall. Interval Training has been a good fit for me. Takes a bit of time to ramp up things. What cardio are you ok with using in the past?

Honestly... not really anything. I guess riding my bike wasn't bad, but that's about all I could do. It's not so much a matter of not minding it, just if I'm capable of doing it. Any sort of running or jumping or high impact stuff isn't going to fly, I haven't done any of that since I was 160lbs so the added weight is going to destroy me. I'm all about torturing myself in my workouts so if I hate it it's only going to make me more mad and want to work harder.[]---[] Equipment Crew Member No.18

You should go to a local gym and pay a day rate and just try a bunch of different stuff out. I love the elliptical machine and hate treadmills. Rowing is OK buy I can't imagine doing it as my normal cardio 3 or 4 times a week. I guess what I'm saying is everyone likes something different and you won't know what you like till you try it out. I wouldn't spend money till I was sure.

I have an airdyne and like it a lot. They're cheap to find used (think around 150 in my area), don't require much/any maintenance and are long lasting.
However, something like a heavy bag is also a lot of fun, more fun than a bike) and can provide a great cardio workout. If you have the ceiling height...jump rope is pretty nice and doesn't impact your knees as much as running (at least that's my sense of it).
Kettlebell/dumbell complexes are maybe another option...but all of the crossfit/hiit type bodyweight cardio options can be mentally tough to motivate yourself for.

Good point, maybe I'll see if I can get in somewhere.
Meh, never really cared for kettlebells for some reason.
I used to have a heavy bag but nowhere to really hang it. Space is too cramped to do decent work, so I ended up getting pissed one day and elbow smashed it while it was on the ground and blew the zipper wide open. No room for jump rope down there either.
I never really thought about used, I'll look around at those and ellipticals for now. Pretty sure the C2 is also too big for my tiny space. Maybe once I get a house.
Thanks guys.Last edited by jfindon; 12-19-2012 at 06:12 AM.

What about a tire/sledgehammer? I've never used one, but I hear it's a pretty good cardio workout, and it seems like you could set it up in a way that doesn't impact your knees.....
I recently started pushing a sled. It's a KILLER workout....not sure how that would affect your knees......[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #29 []---[]

Also, if that is the case, take a drive over to CFF's old building to AFS and check their used equipment - I know their techs are Precor qualified.
Cousin bought an elliptical from them for his wife over the summer, nothing but good things to say and said the price was very good, even for a used one.
Also, just a tip - they LOVE dealing in cash so if you can pay cash they will usually give you an even better price for it.Boomer Rep Crew #1

I got my sled recently from CFF. I use it on the street in front of my home. It doesn't get much traffic, so it is pretty safe. I also tried it a couple of times at the local elementary school (on weekends) and at a parking lot in front of a store that went out of business.
Right now, I tack it onto the end of my workouts on the weekends. I set up 2 cones about 100 feet apart. I push out and back, rest 1 minute, out and back, rest 1 minute, etc. Right now I am up to 7 reps with 65 lbs on it (about 95 lbs total). I love it and hate it! I'd like to expand to 10 reps, although I might have a cardiac event in the process![]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #29 []---[]

I got the cheap one (Version 2). I wasn't sure if I would really end up using it much, so I didn't want to spend a lot on it. The version 2 came with the replaceable feet already on it. I'm OCD about stuff like that, so I would have bought replacement feet if they didn't come with it. I also figured I would never come close to pushing the weight capacity on it.
I bought the harness as well, but I have only pulled it around a few times. THat interval run seems to work pretty well for me. I'm hoping to eventually be able to reduce/eliminate running. I'm still addicted to running, but there are definitely times when I feel like I'm getting too old to keep doing it! When it is light out up until 6PM again I plan to push the sled about 4 times per week.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #29 []---[]

sounds good.
I want one, I missed out a few months ago there was an actual Prowler 2 in the next town over for like $250 but I had the money tied up in something else at the time.
Oh well.
I'll probably go to a local fab shop and have a custom one put together.Boomer Rep Crew #1
