Exclamation Need Help With Diet for 47 Year Old Man

I am a male, 47 years old and have been working out for the last 10 years. I am in decent shape but my problem area is my belly.

For the last 3 months I have focused on getting lean and lost around 12 pounds. My stomach was starting to look great but I lost some mass which I did not like. I am not tall around 5' 7" so when I get lean I feel so small even though a trainer at the gym said it is all in my mind that I look better when I am leaner.

I wanted to gain the 12 pounds back in muscle so, I have started using the Y3T workout to build mass. However, anytime I do this and start eating for growth I always seem to gain in my belly.

What can I do to stop this from happening? I am eating very clean with very few bad carbs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It could be bloating from foods you are sensitive to. It could be that's where you gain fat first. It could be you see a belly where everyone else would need a magnifying glass to see it.

Odds are you didn't lose muscle dropping 12 pounds. You simply saw how much muscle you really had. Loss of glycogen when leaning out also happens.

Picts are needed for a real assessment.

Yes, I always gain fat in my belly first. Is there anyway to stop this? I had cut out almost all starchy carbs for the last 3 months but the Y3T diet has foods such as breads. I want to stick to what they suggest but I seem to gain weight in the belly when I eat these types of carbs such as bread or pasta even though they are whole grains and I limit them. Very frustrating.

If it's a food sensitivity I'd suspect gluten. You can find gluten free breads and pastas. Another thing is if you were previously low carb, or low grain/starches, it may just be rebound. When you increase carbs it's common to suffer bloating. But it usually subsides in a few weeks. Another culprit is too much fiber. Some will have issues above 25g. Others unknowingly eat well in excess of 30g and get relief when they cut back.

Everyone gets a belly when bulking, but you should see fat gains everywhere else too. You shouldn't see a 3 month pregnancy belly while the rest of you is lean. That points to a food sensitivity.

Are you tracking your body fat levels? From what you say no way to know if it's bloating or if it's re-gaining body fat.

Have you been diagnosed by a doctor as having a wheat allergy, or Celiac disease, or some other such sensitivity to gluten?
    No brain, no gain.
