8 surgeries on right arm between nov 2009 and jan 2012. wrist fused straight and bones removed but back into lifting with special devices etc.
guaranteed amputation in the future (7-10 years depending on degeneration) but all costs covered by gov.
for now, despite pain, feelsgoodman. silently reading the misc helped a lot.
thanksbrahs.
cliffs:
- broken scaphoid playing rugby for unit, surgery immediately.
- 9 days post-op, sent on exercise, breaks again.
- surgery/pins/grafts, 6 weeks post-op cast cut off and sent on ex, breaks again.
- surgery/pins/grafts, 10 weeks later MO cuts cast off and attempts to remove K-wire from bone, breaks bone again.
- repeat
- scaphoid/lunate die, entire proximal row removed.
- 3 tendons snap somehow (2 in thumb, 1 in index finger).
- tendon surgery. IPL tendon graft snapped whilst occupational therapist was doing passive movements. surgeon decides to leave it.
- proximal row carpectomy fails and bones collapse on themselves.
- no more surgical options, surgeon fuses all remaining bones and runs a massive plate through forearm-wrist fusing straight.
- unable to fuse in proper position due to not having all bones.
- right shoulder reconstruction from previous injury becoming unstable.
- miscbrahs unknowingly support throughout.

the proximal row carpectomy (removal of 3 bones) was meant to stabilise the whole wrist and last for years and years.. it lasted about 3-4months. there were no other options left for me but to do 1. live in pain, constantly drugged up or 2. have the fusion. downside of fusion: its got a certain lifetime before it wears out, is normally reserved for elderly people with severe arthritis to give them comfort in their final years. I'm 24 and its already wearing out. the metal wears away at the bone because my wrist still tries to move and develops stress fractures etc, eventually they have to cut above the plate to salvage whats left.. UNLESS there is some new internal prosthetic thats available when the time comes.
edit: only regret is having an incompetent doc dealing with me, but i had no ability to control that cause of my chain of command. don't regret military at all, just the unfortunate chain of events that followed post-initial-injury.

it's reinforced with steel and all the individual bones have been fused together to make a single, solid bone.. can't get much more solid than that - there is no movement at all, the muscles still work though which is instinctively why it still 'tries' to move. that happens in or out of a cast, so being in a cast/brace would provide zero benefit. have a special lifting brace made from carbon fibre/kevlar that acts as an exoskeleton almost so no weight runs through the plate/wrist - that helps, but would be of no extra use outside of the gym in day-to-day life.

yeah constant pain from the plate.. like a deep ache. also if i do too much with my hand eg. trying to write/type/hold things the tendons/ligaments are trapped in scar, fatigue really quickly, stop moving properly and causes bulk pain - have osteoarthrosis developing through fingers which has flare ups and hurts a fair bit too. have scripts for endone/******** which help.
right hand = can be used for somethings, but not for extended periods of time and is entirely dependant on how it is that day. changes daily.
DIEL? yeah brah, every single day. its the only thing keeping me sane after losing career and going back to university, being surrounded by 17yo children that want to occupy everything and talk shiz is very frustrating. I was very lopsided cause of the injury and continuing to train unilaterally throughout, but am slowly clawing my way back.. very slow process and the brace that was made custom for me is helping a lot. can't do bar work though, have to rely on DB's and a good spot to help with the balance etc of weights in the brace. getting good gainz though, was 96kg and approx 12% pre injury, dropped to 79kg at my absolute lowest and am now back hovering just above 90kg carrying about 15% bf.
