For example, if I am doing cable curls and its set to 200LBS, am I really lifting 200lbs?

different pulley mechanisms, levers etc will change the actual resistance (so there will even be discrepancy between different cable machines). Best thing to do is to treat cable and free weights as very separate tools and not try to reconcile the weights being used in one to another.

Well 125kg on a cable machine, even if it has one wheel (and no pulley system) is still uncomparable as to 125kg on a barbell.....
So no, it is not the same....but machines are more for finishing workouts after your heavy compounds....
In that sence.....the weight incrementation goes slower up, so that it will suit a wider range of people ....If your body cannot handle it, make sure sheer willpower will.....

it doesnt really matter. choose weights/settings that u find challenging & aim to progress relative to that reference point. its all just a means to an end.
just as some machines dont compare well to free weights, different machines may not compare well to each other either as far as 'magnitude' of load."Though the concept is not scientifically validated in detail (it should be considered as a hypothesis rather than a scientific theory), it is useful from a practical standpoint. When training athletes, it is impossible to wait until scientific research provides all of the necessary knowledge." Vladmir M. Zatsiorsky, Ph.D.
