The reason you cant see the sun at night is because its too dark. You need night-vision goggles to see it.

So at night, you cant see any light because you cant see the sun directly. the rays of light are blocked by the earth.

When you are looking at a ray in the earths atmosphere, (perhaps at sunset, or when the sun shines through a hole in the clouds) you cannot see the actual light ray... you are looking at the light that bounces off the particles in the atmosphere, and those rays do travel straight into your eye, just like the light bouncing off the moon. Think of the dust/mist in the atmosphere as millions of tiny moons.

At night in space... there is no atmosphere, and no particles or dust for the sunlight to reflect off.... so you cant see it even though it is there.

ok well the sun is a star... in fact most stars you see at night is in fact suns in other galaxies and solar systems.

the reason you cannot see our sun at night time is fairly obvious, and it is the same reason why sometimes you do not see the moon during day time.

if the earth was thousands of light years away from out sun, we would see it as we see any other star.

the earth rotates around the sun, but at the same time, the earth spins on an axis. 1 full day is 1 full spin. you will see the sun rising at sunrise, as the earth spins on it's axis, the sun gets higher in the sky, eventually it turns to sunset and you see the sun on the other side of the horizon until you do not see it at all.. at 12pm, the sun will be in its highest position... the sun will be pointing, lets say at india/russia/south africa etc... yet at 12am, there will be no light at all, because the sun is then pointing at the americas and slowly the earth will spin until the light shines on india/russia/south africa again, and light diminishes in the americas

this is why you get full moons, half moons, and quarter moons etc

while it is dark on our side of the earth, it does not mean that the earth completely blocks out the suns view of the moon and vice versa... if it is dark here, and you see a quarter moon, then obviously most of the moon is blocked by earth, but not all of it.... we also have nights where we do not see the moon at all for this same reason.

Doesnt even make sense bro. First of all if the nearest star was 1000 light years away, we wouldnt see it for 1000 years. Im only 23 and Ive seen heaps of stars.

Secondly, both sides of the sun obviously emit light. But only one side at a time, just like the earth. Actually this is true for all planets, otherwise there would be no nights.

Strong logic in this thread. Are you all retarded?

That's because what you're seeing is an old photography, thousand years old. Some stars you see today have been dead. Didnt you watch watchmen and dr manhattan comics when you were a kid?

The sun and the moon are the same thing; what we call the moon is just the reverse side of the sun, it moves around very slowly so by night time we see the back of the sun (the moon)

Research? lol. You said most stars we see at night...we weren't talking about high powered telescopes here. Even in the best close-up view we have of our nearest galaxy, Andromeda, it's hard to pick out individual stars. And that's using the Hubble. Every star you see at night is in the Milky Way.
