Protein Shake After A Workout Is a Myth,

I'm aware that many people on the nutrition section know this already. However I'm making this post just to allow for some new comers to understand that a good diet that adheres to sustainable macros and a concrete demand of calories precedes having that "30-45 minute window of oppurtunity after your work out."

So, put simply, if you forget your protein shake the day of your workout, it doesn't matter, go home and drink it.

    Please read the following:

So now what are we supposed to base our nutrition on? Enter the most underrated scientific paper in the last 5 years. Tipton and colleagues (2003) examined responsiveness of protein synthesis for a day after a workout, and found it to reflect a 24 hour enhanced level. That’s right folks, a FULL DAY! This means that having a morning shake will have the same impact on muscle protein synthesis as one consumed following the workout!

These results shouldn’t be too surprising because we’ve known for over a decade that postworkout protein synthesis is jacked up for this long (MacDougall et al., 1995), but if you’re discovering this for the first time, then it’s pretty exciting!

Some research suggests that even 48 hours after the workout our protein synthesis levels can be elevated by ~33% (Phillips et al., 1997), giving us an even longer period during which we can maximize our muscle growth with protein drinks.

why not have food instead of a protein drink?

I know I'd sooner eat a chunk of an animal, than drink a shake

No need to even drink it when you get home. The window is realistically closer to 24hours than 30min.

I think the reason for that 'hate' is because there is a sticky by Alan Aragon already stating this.......

Protein synthesis is enhanced because your testosterone is elevated after a workout. But you still have to supply your body with protein to be synthesized.

It doesn't matter what your levels of protein synthesis are if you don't eat any protein. You'll still be catabolic. Not saying you need to take whey protein after a workout, but you need to take something.

It is a myth, but there can still be good reasons for knocking one back.

I workout in the morning after eating a small breakfast and before getting ready for work. After my workout I have about 25 minutes to get ready for work. I won't have a chance to eat for at least four hours after working out. So, I knock down a quick protein shake or eat a small protein bar.

For me it helps prevent drops in energy level, further reduces post work out soreness, and prevents me from binging when I do get to eat. I know it isn't going to help with muscle growth. It does have other benefits that make it worth while for me. For those reasons, I will probably keep using protein shakes when finances allow.

No hate, just don't understand why you want to clutter up this site even more with information that is already STICKIED in the TOP of the nutrition section? By your logic, I should just go take an Aragon sticky and copy and paste 100 lines out of it and create 100 new threads to help everyone out.. I mean it makes sense right? No reason for them to just read the one thread that has all that info in it that everyone directs them to, that they never visit.

This gives newbies a way to discuss other reasons for using a protein shake. Just cool out. If you don't like it don't post in the thread. That will make it die faster than bumping it to express anger at its existence.

I'm not angry... or mad... or flipping out... or punching my keyboard. He is attempting to educate people, therefore I am attempting to educate him, and others on stickies. If me bumping this thread a couple times will stop the creation of more pointless threads, then so be it. I've only been here for about 6 months, and the lack of comprehension astounds me.... am I'm not very smart to begin with.

I have seen and read the timing is a myth sticky. It is locked and means no more room for discussion. Stickies are great, but sometimes you still need to bring a topic up. The provision being that you take it in a new direction. That is what I was attempting to do.

I see your point, I just misunderstood your point. The way your first post read it did seem like an angry attack.
