So I was just wondering, pretty new to working out only about a month, but I have a lot of time now and I'm able to go to the gym about 4 times a week, so I was thinking of now having a shoulder day. The only thing is I don't really get the benefits of doing shoulder exercises, like don't get me wrong I can feel it work when I'm working out, but does it help with my strength at all, or is it just for aesthetics?

If you don't do shoulders, you'll look retarded, and I'm pretty sure it could lead to problems when you do things like Bench Press. You can't ask whether there is any benefit of doing shoulders. They'll get bigger and stronger, which will help you in one way or another, even if it is just looking good compared to the rest of your body.

Personally, I didn't train shoulders for a long time. Definitely regret it now. My bench is lagging because of it and my OHP is weak as **** w/ non-existent rear delts.

If you want to train to knock someone out quick, bodybuilding/powerlifting is not your main concern. The best way to improve your punching power is by punching more. Training your shoulders will make your progress faster but punching a heavy bag should be the staple of your workout. In terms of functional strength, shoulders, forearms, legs and back (especially traps and lower back) are crucial, then you have chest, and far out the biceps and triceps. Having stronger forearms, shoulders, back and legs are what's required to lend a perfect hit, because you really don't punch using your arm, your arm is just like a whip, the power comes from legs, goes up to the back, then to the shoulders, with your forearms being firmly pressed before impact. Shoulders are also the muscle that connects your arms to your torso, they are practically used in every workout you do to stabilize the weight as you lift it, being on back or chest lifts... Weak shoulders are a certain way to get an injury... Also, when it concerns aesthetics... Although most would say that chest and bis are the fanciest muscles, the minority that considers forearms, traps, shoulders and triceps to be more pleasing seem to be more correct.
Summary :
- To punch harder, punch more on a heavy back, weight training should only assist your progression
- Shoulders are the link between your torso and arms, they are worked every session, not training them accordingly is a route to eminent injury.
- Shoulders, legs, forearms, and back are curcial for power and functional strength.
Putting too much mass on your biceps and triceps can be counter-productive because in terms of martial arts, speed is best."By striving to do the impossible, man has always achieved what is possible. Those who have cautiously done no more than they believed possible have never taken a single step forward." Mikhail Bakunin ~
